Q9. A cylindrical specimen of a metal alloy 54.8 mm long and 10.8 mm in diameter is stressed in tension. A true stress of 365 MP

a causes the specimen to plastically elongate to a length of 61.8 mm. If it is known that the strain-hardening exponent for this alloy is 0.2, calculate the true stress (in MPa) necessary to plastically elongate a specimen of this same material from a length of 54.8 mm to a length of 64.7 mm. Answer:

σ = 391.2 MPa

Explanation:

The relation between true stress and true strain is given as:

σ = k εⁿ

where,

σ = true stress = 365 MPa

k = constant

ε = true strain = Change in Length/Original Length

ε = (61.8 - 54.8)/54.8 = 0.128

n = strain hardening exponent = 0.2

Therefore,

365 MPa = K (0.128)^0.2

K = 365 MPa/(0.128)^0.2

k = 550.62 MPa

Now, we have the following data:

σ = true stress = ?

k = constant = 550.62 MPa

ε = true strain = Change in Length/Original Length

ε = (64.7 - 54.8)/54.8 = 0.181

n = strain hardening exponent = 0.2

Therefore,

σ = (550.62 MPa)(0.181)^0.2

<u>σ = 391.2 MPa</u>

Two kilograms of oxygen fills the cylinder of a piston-cylinder assembly. The initial volume and pressure are 2 m3 and 1 bar, re
valentinak56 [21]

Answer: Heat transfer (Q) is 521 kJ.

Explanation: In the piston-cilinder assembly, we can suppose that the oxygen act as an ideal gas, so, it can be used the General Gas Equation:

PV=\frac{m}{M}RT, where:

P is pressure;

V is volume;

m is mass;

M is molar mass;

R is a constant: R = 8.314.10^{-5} m³bar.K⁻¹.mol⁻¹;

T is temperature;

Using this equation, find the intial temperature:

PV = \frac{m}{M}RT

1.2 = \frac{2}{16}.8.314.10^{-5}.T

T = 1.924.10^{5} K

To determine the final temperature, use Combined Gas Law:

\frac{P_{i} . V_{i} }{T_{i} } = \frac{P.V }{T}, in which, the left side of the equality is related to the initial values and the right side, to the final values.

As pressure is constant:

\frac{V_{i} }{T_{i} } =\frac{V}{T}

T = \frac{V.T_{i} }{V_{i} }

T = \frac{4.1.924.10^{-5} }{2}

T = 3.85.10^{5} K

With the temperatures, calculate the heat transfer of the process:

Q = m.k.ΔT, where:

k is heat constant

ΔT = T - T_{i}

Q = m.k.ΔT

Q = 2.1.35.(3.85 - 1.92).10^{5}

Q = 521 kJ

The heat transfer in the process is 521 kJ.

An electrical utility delivers 6.25E10 kWh of power to its customers in a year. What is the average power required during the ye
Sindrei [870]

Answer:

The overall Utility delivered to customers in a year 'U' = 6.25 X 10¹⁰Kwh

However, the average power P, required for a year, t  = ? Kw

Expressing their relationship, we will have

             U = P x t

Given t = 1 year = 24 x 365 hours (assume a year operation is 365 days)

          t = 8760 hours

P = \frac{62500000000}{8760}

P = 7134.7Kw

Hence, the average power required during the year is 7,135Kw

Now to calculate the energy used by the power plant in a year (in quads)?

Recall, Efficiency, η = Power Output/Power Input (100)

so, we have

η = P₀/P₁, given

0.45 = \frac{7134.7Kw}{P₁}

P₁ = 15,855Kw

the total energy E₁ used in a year = 15,855x24x365 = 138.89MJoules

So to convert this to quads, Note;

1 quads of energy = 10¹⁵ Joules

The total energy used is 0.000000139 quads

Now to find the cubic feet of natural gas required to generate this power?

Note: 0.29Kwh of Power generated  = 1 cubic feet of natural gas used

Since, the power plant generated = 62500000000Kwh

The cubic feet of natural gas used = \frac{62500000000}{0.29}

Hence, 2.155x10²⁰cubic feet of N.gas was used to generate this much power.

A six- lane freeway ( three lanes in each direction) in a scenic area has a measured free- flow speed of 55 mi/ h. The peak- hou
Novosadov [1.4K]

Answer:

0.867

Explanation:

The driver population factor (f_{p})can be estimated using the equation below:

f_{p} = \frac{V}{PHF*N*f_{HV}*v_{p}}

The value of the heavy vehicle factor (f_{HV}) is determined below:

The values of the E_{T} = 2 and E_{R} = 3 are gotten from the tables for the RVs, trucks and buses upgrades for passenger-car equivalents. Therefore:

f_{HV} = 1/[1+0.08(2-1)+0.06(3-1)] = 1/[1+0.08+0.12] = 1/1.2 = 0.833

Furthermore, the vp is taken as 2250 pc/(h*In) from the table of LOS criteria for lane freeway using the 15 minutes flow rate. Therefore:

f_{p} = 3900/[0.8*3*0.833*2250] = 3900/4498.2 = 0.867
