A standard weight known to weigh 10 grams. Some suspect bias in weights due to manufacturing process. To assess the accuracy of

a laboratory scale,that weight is weighed repeatedly. The scale readings are normally distributed with unknown mean. The population standard deviation of the scale readings is known to be 0.0003 gram.
(a) The weight is weighed FIVE times. The mean result is 10.0044 grams. Give a 98% confidence interval for the mean weight. Please keep 5 decimals in your answer.

Answer:

a) The 98% confidence interval for the mean weight is between 10.00409 grams and 10.00471 grams

b) 49 measurements are needed.

Step-by-step explanation:

Question a:

We have that to find our \alpha level, that is the subtraction of 1 by the confidence interval divided by 2. So:

\alpha = \frac{1 - 0.98}{2} = 0.01

Now, we have to find z in the Ztable as such z has a pvalue of 1 - \alpha.

That is z with a pvalue of 1 - 0.01 = 0.99, so Z = 2.327.

Now, find the margin of error M as such

M = z\frac{\sigma}{\sqrt{n}}

In which \sigma is the standard deviation of the population and n is the size of the sample.

M = 2.327\frac{0.0003}{\sqrt{5}} = 0.00031

The lower end of the interval is the sample mean subtracted by M. So it is 10.0044 - 0.00031 = 10.00409 grams

The upper end of the interval is the sample mean added to M. So it is 10 + 0.00031 = 10.00471 grams

The 98% confidence interval for the mean weight is between 10.00409 grams and 10.00471 grams.

(b) How many measurements must be averaged to get a margin of error of +/- 0.0001 with 98% confidence?

We have to find n for which M = 0.0001. So

M = z\frac{\sigma}{\sqrt{n}}

0.0001 = 2.327\frac{0.0003}{\sqrt{n}}

0.0001\sqrt{n} = 2.327*0.0003

\sqrt{n} = \frac{2.327*0.0003}{0.0001}

(\sqrt{n})^2 = (\frac{2.327*0.0003}{0.0001})^2

n = 48.73

Rounding up

49 measurements are needed.

In Virginia, 120 lame dogs were tested for arthritis and Lyme disease. The results showed that 42 of the dogs had Lyme disease,
miskamm [114]

Answer:

The number of dogs that had both Lyme disease and arthritis is 18

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x represent dogs that have both Lyme disease and arthritis

Dog with only Lyme disease = 42 - x

Dog with only arthritis = 96 - x

The sum of the 3 category should give 120

x + (42 - x) + (96 - x) = 120

Collect like terms and solve

x - x - x + 42 + 96 = 120

-x + 138 = 120

138 - 120 = x

x = 18

Dog with only Lyme disease = 42 - x = 42 - 18 = 24

Dog with only arthritis = 96 - x = 96 - 18 = 78

Therefore, the number of dogs with both Lyme disease and anthritis is 18.

Alia wants to write the equation of the graphed line in point-slope form. These are the steps she plans to use:
baherus [9]
(2,5)(1,3)
slope(m) = (3 - 5) / (1 - 2) = -2/-1 = 2 (2 units up, one unit to the right)

y - y1 = m(x - x1)....using (1,3)
y - 3 = 2(x - 1)....talia's last step is incorrect because she didn't sub in her slope of 2

Shayna enlarged a square photo by adding 10 inches to each side so it could be seen on a large poster. The area of the enlarged
Over [174]
The area of a square is expressed as the length of the side to the power of two, A = s^2. We were given the area of the enlarged photo which is 256 in^2. Also, it was stated that the length of the enlarged photo is the length of the original photo plus ten inches. So, from these statements we can make an equation to solve for x which represents the length of the original photo.

A = s^2
where s = (x+10)
A = (x+10)^2 = 256
Solving for x,
x= 6 in.

The dimensions of the original photo is 6 x 6.

The following data shows the low temperature in Vancouver, in degrees Celsius, for two weeks in January one year. 8.90, 8.35, 8.

There is no option of the box plots, so I have created a version that would represent this data.

To make the box plot you will need the lower extreme, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, and upper extreme.

Please see the attached picture.
