A student is making an electromagnet to conduct an investigation. She gathers two nails, a 5 cm long wire, a 10 cm long wire, a

battery, and a box of paper clips. She starts by coiling the 5 cm wire around the nail and attaches the ends of the wire to the battery. She records the number of paperclips it attracts on her lab sheet during each of three trials. Next, she coils the 10 cm wire around the nail. She connects the ends of the wire to the battery. She completes three trials with this second setup. What do you predict about the number of paperclips that will picked-up in Trial 2 and Trial 3 for the 10 cm wire? Provide evidence from the investigation to support your answer.

Here, we are required to predict the number of paperclips that will be picked-up in trial 2 and trial 3 for the 10cm wire and also provide evidence from the investigation to support the answer.

The no. of paperclips attracted by the 10cm wire, in trial 2 and trial 3 of the investigation are 17.5 and 12.5 paperclips respectively.

First, it is important to enlist the factors that affect the strength of the magnetic field in electromagnets and they include:

  • Nature of the core material
  • Strength of the Current passing through the core
  • The number of turns of wire on the core
  • The shape and size of the core

However, among the listed factors, only the No. of turns of wire on the core is altered in this experiment and this factor is related to the strength of an electromagnet according to the statement below:

  • The strength of the magnetic field of an electromagnet increases when the no. of turns of wire is increased and vice versa.

Therefore, according to the investigation conducted for the:

  • 5cm wire, the no. of coils around the nail= 10 and the strength of the electromagnet is sufficient to attract 4, 7, and 5 paperclips in trials 1, 2, and 3 respectively.

  • 10cm wire on the other hand, the no. of coils around the nail = 20 and the strength of the electromagnet is sufficient to attract 10 paperclips in the first trial.

Therefore, a relationship between the no. of coils around the nail and the no. of paperclips attracted can be generated as follows:

  • (N5/N10) = a × (P5/P10)
  • where a is the coefficient of proportionality.

Therefore, for trial 1,

  • (10/20) = a × (4/10)

  • Therefore, a = 0.5/0.4 = 1.25

Therefore, to predict the no. of paperclips attracted by the 10cm wire, in trial 2 and trial 3, we have;

  • For trial 2; (10/20) = 1.25 × (7/P10)

  • Therefore, P10 (trial 2) = (7× 1.25)/0.5 = 17.5

  • Therefore, P10 (trial 2) = 17.5 paperclips.

  • For trial 3; (10/20) = 1.25 × (5/P10)

  • Therefore, P10 (trial 2) = (5× 1.25)/0.5 = 12.5
  • Therefore, P10 (trial 2) = 12.5 paperclips.

Ultimately, the no. of paperclips attracted by the 10cm wire, in trial 2 and trial 3 of the investigation are 17.5 and 12.5 paperclips respectively.

Given:
Three numbers in an AP, all positive.
Sum is 21.
Sum of squares is 155.
Common difference is positive.

We do not know what x and y stand for.  Will just solve for the three numbers in the AP.
Let m=middle number, then since sum=21, m=21/3=7
Let d=common difference.
Sum of squares
(7-d)^2+7^2+(7+d)^2=155
Expand left-hand side
3*7^2-2d^2=155
d^2=(155-147)/2=4
d=+2 or -2
=+2  (common difference is positive)

Therefore the three numbers of the AP are

aniked [119]
This is how we solved and make the equation.
Stock A = 100
Stock B = 45

For the past months, his stocks inversely decreased.
Stock A = m cents / share
Stock B = n cents * share

So the equation is
= 100 (0.01m) + 45 (0.01n)
