Max might be experiencing a very stressful situation that requires him to do a fight-or-flight response. Neurons are responsible for detecting stimuli from the internal and external environment of the body. It reacts accordingly through a series of chains of synapses that send nerve impulses to the brain. A sudden spike in the electrical energy means that something very sudden must be occurring within Max' immediate environment, and he needs to react to the stimuli quickly.

Amber is participating in a local psychology experiment in which the research assistant asks amber to hold two pencils in front
Leni [432]

Amber finds this terribly difficult, which demonstrates the importance of binocular cues. Binocular cues are  cues taken in by two eyes (binocular), versus one eye (monocular). This means that the brain is able to construct a three-dimensional interpretation of the world (by collecting information from the right and left eyes and then integrating the obtained information).
