By asking John Proctor to recite the 10 Commandments. Hale wanted to prove his Christianity, and  loyalty to God, In other words, to test him on his degree of faith. So that, option C is correct. If he could recite them, he was faithful to God; if he couldn’t he was likely to be involved in witchcraft.

In The Crucible, Hale asks John to recite the Ten Commandments, however, he can't recite all of them.  Elizabeth must complete the list by citing the prohibition against adultery.
