Set up your variables:
B1 = # of boys last year
B2 = # of boys this year
G1 = # of girls last year
G2 = # of girls this year

We know that B2 + G2 = 360
There was a 20% increase from last year in total students, so:
360/1.2 = 300 total students last year
So we have:
B1 + G1 = 300 (our first equation)

Now there was a 10% increase in boys, so:
1.1*B1 = B2
And 40% increase in grills, so:
1.4G1 = G2

So substituting these values into B2 + G2 = 360, gets us:
1.1*B1 + 1.4*G1 = 360 (our second equation)

Now we have two equations and two unknowns:
B1 + G1 = 300
1.1*B1 + 1.4*G1 = 360

I'll multiply the top equation by 11 and the bottom equation by 10:
11B1 + 11G1 = 3300
11B1 + 14G1 = 3600

Subtract the two equations:
-3G1 = -300
G1 = 100

Thus B1 must be 200.

There were 200 boys last year and 100 girls last year.

A picture measuring 2.5" high by 6" wide is to be enlarged so that the width is now 18 inches. How tall will the picture be?
viktelen [127]
We have that
the picture original is 2.5 in x 6 in
high=2.5 in
wide=6 in

the picture enlarged is
high=2.5*x
wide=6*x-----> 6*x=18--------> x=18/6----------> x=3
x is the factor scale
so
high=2.5*x-----> 2.5*3----> 7.5 in

the answer is
7.5 in

Q3. a cyclist bikes x distance at 10 miles per hour and returns over the same path at 8 miles per hour. what is the cyclist's av
Sladkaya [172]
If he bikes for 10 miles per hour and 8 miles per hour for the same distance x miles, he went 10 miles per hour for x/10 hours, as Distance = Rate*Time and on the way back he would go for x/8 hours. So then he went 2x distance, in x/8 + x/10 hours. Since x/8 + x/10 = 10x/80 + 8x/80 = 18x/80 = 9x/40, he went 2x miles in 9x/40 hours. this can be converted into a rate with the above equation Distance = Rate*Time, so 2x=(9x/40) * Rate, thus we divide by 9x/40 on both sides to get 80x/9x = Rate, the x cancels out, and we get 80/9 Miles per hour.

3) I think the sample is representative because all ther terms have the same probability of being selected.

Further, given that the cards are replaced every time all the students will face the same population when they are going to select a sample.

Olin [163]

This question is incomplete, here is the complete question:

Suppose in the next year, 2007, College D's expenses and enrollment remain about the same, but in addition to their current revenues, they receive an additional $50,000,000 grant. This would allow them to reduce average tuition by how much?

A) $1388.89

B) $3571.43

C) $5555.56

D) $9500.00

E) $25888.89

number of students = 36,000

Answer: A) $

1388.89

Step-by-step explanation:

the college received additional grant which is $50,000,000

and the number of students is 36,000,

and we also know that expenses and enrollment remained the same.

So if we have more money (grants) and nothing changed (expenses remain the same)

dividing the grant by the number of students will show just how much the average tuition fee would be reduced

therefore R = G/n

R = 50,000,000 / 36000

R = 1,388.888 ≈ $1388.89
