Two circles, called c1 and c2, are graphed below. The center of c1 is at the origin, and the center of c2 is the point in the fi

rst quadrant where the line y=x intersects c1. Suppose c1 has radius 2. C2 touches the x and y axes each in one point. What are the equations of the two circles?

Answer:

<em>The equation of C_{1} is:  x^2+y^2=4</em>

<em>and the equation of C_{2} is:  x^2+y^2-2\sqrt{2}x-2\sqrt{2}y+2=0</em>

Step-by-step explanation:

The standard form of circle equation: (x-h)^2+(y-k)^2 = r^2 , where (h,k) is the center and  r is the radius of the circle.

The center of the circle C_{1} is at origin or at (0, 0)  and has radius of 2.

So, the equation of the circle C_{1} will be........

(x-0)^2+(y-0)^2=(2)^2\\ \\ x^2+y^2=4 ..........................................(1)

Now, the center of C_{2} is the point in the first quadrant, where the line y=x intersects C_{1}

Solving the equations  x^2+y^2=4 and y=x , we will get......

x^2+x^2= 4  <em>(Substituting y as x)</em>

2x^2= 4\\ \\ x^2=2\\ \\ x=\pm \sqrt{2}

So,  y=x = \pm \sqrt{2}

Thus, the center of the circle C_{2} will be at  (\sqrt{2},\sqrt{2})  <em>(Negative value is ignored as the point is in first quadrant)</em>

Now, the distance between the center of C_{2} and the x-axis is \sqrt{2} and the circle touches the x-axis only at one point.

That means, the radius of the circle C_{2} will be also \sqrt{2}

So, the equation of the circle C_{2} will be......

(x-\sqrt{2})^2+(y-\sqrt{2})^2= (\sqrt{2})^2\\ \\ x^2-2\sqrt{2}x+2+y^2-2\sqrt{2}y+2=2\\ \\ x^2+y^2-2\sqrt{2}x-2\sqrt{2}y+2=0

A local sorority sold hot dogs and bratwursts at the spring fling picnics. The first day they sold 8 dozen hot dogs and 13 dozen
Sergeu [11.5K]

Answer: Cost of each hot dog and bratwursts would be $1.1 and $1.35 each.

Step-by-step explanation:

Since we have given that

Cost of each dozen hot dogs be 'x'.

Cost of each dozen bratwursts be 'y'.

The first day they sold 8 dozen hot dogs and 13 dozen bratwursts for $316.20.

So, the equation would be

8x+13y=\$316.20

.The second day they sold 10 dozen hot dogs and 15 dozen bratwursts for a total of $375.00.

So, the equation would be

10x+15y=\$375.00\\\\2x+3y=\$75

So, the equations becomes

8x+13y=316.20--------------(2)\\\\(2x+3y=75)\times 4\\\\\implies 8x+12y=300------------(1)

So, by elimination method, we get that

8x+13y=316.20\\\\(-)8x+(-)12y=(-)300\\\\--------------\\y=\$16.20

Put the value of y in the eq(1), we get that

2x+3y=75\\\\2x+3(16.20)=75\\\\2x+48.6=75\\\\2x=75-48.60\\\\2x=26.4\\\\x=\dfrac{26.4}{2}\\\\x=\$13.2

Hence, the cost of hot dogs would be \dfrac{13.2}{12}=\$1.1

And the cost of bratwursts would be \dfrac{16.2}{12}=\$1.35

A falcon flying 55 mph crosses a lake in 1 minute. How long would it take a hummingbird flying 45 mph to cross the same lake?
OverLord2011 [107]

Answer:

1 2/9 minutes

Step-by-step explanation:

55 mph

55 / 60 = 11/12

11/12 of a mile = 1 minute

45 mph

45 / 60 = 3/4

3/4 of a mile = 1 minute

11/12 divided by 3/4

11/12 * 4/3

We can cross-cancel

11/3 * 1/3 = 11/9 = 1 2/9

It takes 1 2/9 minutes for the hummingbird to cross the lake

Hope this helps!

"Which of the following are continuous functions? (Select all that apply.)
Natasha2012 [34]

Answer:

  □ The temperature at a specific location as a function of time.

  □ The temperature at a specific time as a function of the distance due west from New York City.

  □ The altitude above sea level as a function of the distance due west from New York City.

Step-by-step explanation:

Temperature tends to vary continuously over distance and time.

Altitude rarely changes so abruptly we'd have to say it is a discontinuous function. Even a cliff has a (very high) defined slope.

Taxi charges tend to increment according to a rate schedule. That is, for each passing minute or fraction of a mile, the amount due jumps to a new value. We'd have to say those are discontinuous.

The nature of electrical circuits is such that current is never discontinuous. Even when the circuit is disconnected by a switch, the arcing at the switch contacts ensures the current is continuous as it rapidly goes to zero.

Prove algebraically that the recurring decimal 0.472 can be written as<br> 17<br> 36
Katen [24]

Given:

The recurring decimal is 0.47\overline{2}.

To prove:

Algebraically that the recurring decimal 0.47\overline{2} can be written as \dfrac{17}{36}.

Proof:

Let,

x=0.47\overline{2}

x=0.472222...

Multiply both sides by 100.

100x=47.2222...     ...(i)

Multiply both sides by 10.

1000x=472.2222...        ...(ii)

Subtract (i) from (ii).

1000x-100x=472.2222...-47.2222...

900x=425

Divide both sides by 900.

x=\dfrac{425}{900}

x=\dfrac{17}{36}

So, 0.47\overline{2}=\dfrac{17}{36}.

Hence proved.

14 + 9 + 12 + 13 + 12 = 60 total pencils.

60 pencils /  5 people = 12 pencils each.
