A fireboat is to fight fires at coastal areas by drawing seawater with a density of 1030 kg/m through a 20-cm-diameter pipe at a

rate of 0.1 m /s and discharging it through a hose nozzle with an exit diameter of 5 cm. The total irreversible head loss of the system is 3 m, and the position of the nozzle is 3 m above sea level. For a pump efficiency of 70 percent, determine the required shaft power input to the pump and the water discharge velocity.

Answer:

A. 50.93 m/s

B. 201 kW

Explanation:

We have that pump is moving 0.1m³ of water every second. The nozzle is 5cm diameter = 0.05m , or 2.5cm radius. 2.5cm = 0.025m. The cross sectional area of the nozzle is therefore, A = πr²

π×0.025²

= 0.001963m²

Therefore, for 0.1m³ of water to pass through this nozzle in 1 second, it must be travelling at

0.1 / 0.001963

= 50.93 m/s

Pump is meant to impart energy to the water to raise it 4m from sea level to the nozzle and accelerate it from zero to 50.93m/s through the nozzle. Now, assuming no losses, the dynamic energy of the water is equal to the potential energy it would have if it was stationary at some height h.

P.E = k.E

mgh = 0.5mv²

h = v² / 2g

h = 50.93² / (2 ×9.81)

h = 132.21m

So the equivalent head of water required due to accelerating the water is 132.21m. The static head is 4m since the nozzle is 4m above the sea and there is a further loss of 3m of head in the system due to friction etc. So the total head the pump must provide is

132.21 + 4 + 3

= 139.21m

Density = mass / volume so mass = density × volume.

The Pump is moving 0.1m³ per second of water. Therefore in one second the mass of water pumped is

0.1 × 1030 = 103kg

The total energy transferred from the pump to the water is therefore

Potential enegry, which is = mgh

= 103 ×9.81 × 139.21

= 140,662.0 Nm/s

= 140,662.0 Watts

But, we are told that the pump is only 70% efficient. Which implies

140,662 = 0.7P where P is the power supplied to the pump

so P = 140,662 / 0.7

= 200,946 Watts

= 201 kW

An annealed copper strip of 228 mm wide and 25 mm thick being rolled to a thickness of 20 mm, in one pass. The roll radius is 30
sdas [7]

Answer:

The roll force is 1.59 MN

The power required in this operation is 644.96 kW

Explanation:

Given;

width of the annealed copper, w = 228 m

thickness of the copper, h₀ = 25 mm

final thickness, hf = 20 mm

roll radius, R = 300 mm

The roll force is given by;

F = LwY_{avg}

where;

w is the width of the annealed copper

Y_{avg} is average true stress of the strip in the roll gap

L is length of arc in contact, and for frictionless situation it is given as;

L = \sqrt{R(h_o-h_f)} \\\\L = \sqrt{300(25-20)}\\\\L = 38.73 \ mm

Now, determine the average true stress, Y_{avg}, for the annealed copper;

The absolute value of the true strain, ε = ln(25/20)

ε = 0.223

from true stress vs true strain graph; at true strain of 0.223, the true stress is 280 MPa.

Then, the average true stress = ¹/₂(280 MPa.) = 180 MPa

Finally determine the roll force;

F = LwY_{avg}

F = (\frac{38.73 }{1000})(\frac{228}{1000})*180 \ MPa\\\\F =   1.59 \ MN

The power required in this operation is given by;

P = \frac{2\pi FLN}{60}\\\\P =  \frac{2\pi (1.59*10^6)(0.03873)(100)}{60}\\\\P = 644955.2 \ W\\\\P = 644.96 \ kW

sp2606 [1]

Answer: 0.021818m =2.18x10^-²m

Explanation: Using Laplace principle

Design pressure is =12 bar= 1200000N/m²

T = Wall thickness

Design stress=110Mn/m²= 110,000,000N/m²

Radius= diameter/2 =4/2=2m

Design stress=Hoop stress =Pr/t where p=internal pressure or internal pressure, r=radius and t= wall thickness.

As Laplace equation stated.

110,000,000= 1,2000,00 x 2/t

t= 2,400,000/110,000,000.

t= 0.021818m

t=2.18x10^-2m.

A 227 pound compressor is supported by four legs that contact the floor of a machine shop. At the bottom of each leg there is a
Ganezh [65]

Answer:

1.312 in

Explanation:

Data provided in the question:

Weight of the compressor, W = 227 pound

Number of legs = 4

Maximum pressure = 42 psi

Now,

Let F be the force taken by the legs

Therefore,

W = 4F

or

227 pound = 4F

or

F = 56.75 pounds

Also,

Force = Pressure × Area

or

56.75 pounds = 42 psi × πr²                      [ r is the diameter of one leg]

or

r² = 0.4301

or

r = 0.656

therefore,

diameter = 2r = 2 × 0.656

= 1.312 in

Sonja [21]

Answer:

=> base transport factor = 0.98.

=> emitter injection efficiency = 0.99.

=> common-base current gain = 0.97.

=> common-emitter current gain = 32.34.

=> ICBO = 1 × 10^-6 A.

=> base transit time = 0.325.

=> lifetime = 1.875.

Explanation:

(Kindly check the attachment for the diagram showing the dominant current components, with proper arrows, for directions in the normal active mode).

The following parameters or data are given for a p-n-p BJT with NE 7 NB 7 NC and they are: IEp = 10 mA, IEn = 100 mA, ICp = 9.8 mA, and ICn = 1 mA.

(1). The base transport factor = ICp/IEp=9.8/10 =  0.98.

(2). emitter injection efficiency =IEp/ IEp + ICn = 10/10 + 0.1 =  0.99.

(3).common-base current gain = 0.98 × 0.99 = 0.9702.

(4).common-emitter current gain =0.97 / 1- 0.97  = 32.34.

(5). Icbo = Ico = 1 × 10^-6 A.

(6). base transit time = 1248 × 10^-2 × (1.38× 10^-23/1.603 × 10^-19). = 0.325.

(7).lifetime;

= > 2 = √0.325 + √ lifetime.

= Lifetime = 2.875.
