QUESTION 18 Solid aluminum and gaseous oxygen react in a combination reaction to produce aluminum oxide: 4Al (s) 3O 2 (g) 2Al 2O

3 (s) In a particular experiment, the reaction of 2.5 g of Al with 2.5 g of O 2 produced 3.5 g of Al 2O 3. The % yield of the reaction is ________.

Answer:

Percent yield = 85.4%

Explanation:

Given data:

Mass of Al = 2.5 g

Mass of oxygen = 2.5 g

Mass of aluminium oxide = 3.5 g

Percent yield = ?

Solution:

Chemical equation:

4Al + 3O₂  → 2Al₂O₃

First of all we will calculate the number of moles of each reactant.

Number of moles of Al:

Number of moles = mass/ molar mass

Number of moles = 2.5 g/ 27 g/mol

Number of moles = 0.09 mol

Number of moles of oxygen:

Number of moles = mass/ molar mass

Number of moles = 2.5 g/ 32 g/mol

Number of moles = 0.08 mol

Now we will compare the moles of aluminium oxide with oxygen and aluminium.

                         Al            :          Al₂O₃

                           4           :            2

                        0.09        :         2/4×0.09 = 0.045

                          O₂         :          Al₂O₃

                           3           :            2

                        0.08        :         2/4×0.08 = 0.04

The  number of moles of aluminium oxide produced by oxygen are less so it will limiting reactant.

Theoretical yield of aluminium oxide:

Mass = number of moles × molar mass

Mass = 0.04 mol ×  101.96 g/mol

Mass = 4.1 g

Percent yield:

Percent yield = actual yield /theoretical yield × 100

Percent yield = 3.5 g/ 4.1 g × 100

Percent yield = 85.4%

One hour of bicycle riding can require 500-900 kcal of energy, depending on the speed, the terrain, and the weight of the racer.
solniwko [45]

Answer:

145 hours

Explanation:

Since one hour of riding a bicycle takes up 505 kcal of energy. It is also stated that one gram of body fat is equal to 7.70 kcal. Also, it is given that 1 pound of body fat is equal to 454 g.

Hence;

1 Ib= 454 g

21 Ib= 21 × 454/1 = 9534 g

But

1g of body fat = 7.70kcal

9534 g of body fat = 9534 × 7.70 kcal/1 = 73411.8 kcal

If 505 kcal is lost in 1 hour

73411.8 kcal is lost in 73411.8 kcal × 1hour/505k cal = 145 hours

Be sure to answer all parts. Consider the following reaction: Cd(s) + Fe2+(aq) → Cd2+(aq) + Fe(s) E o (Fe2+ / Fe) = −0.4400 V, E
Bezzdna [24]

Answer:

EMF = -0.17 V

No

Explanation:

For the reaction :

Cd(s) + Fe2+(aq) → Cd2+(aq) + Fe(s)

we will be using the Nersnt equation to calculate Ecell:

Ecell =  Eº -0.0592 V/2 ln Q

where Q = ( Fe⁺² )/ (Cd²⁺)

and (Fe²⁺) and (Cd²) are the molar concentration of Fe²⁺ and Cd²⁺

Reduction

Fe²⁺ + 2e⁻  ⇒ Fe(s)      Eº red = -0.4400 V

Oxidation

Cd (s)   ⇒ Cd²⁺ + 2e⁻    Eº ox = +0.4000 V

Eºcell = Eox + Ered = 0.4000 V + (-0.4400 V) = -0. 0400 V

Ecell = Eº -0.0692 V/2 ln Q = -0.0400 V - 0.0592/2 ln ( 0.80/0.010 ) = -0.17V

No because Eºcell is negative and  ΔºG will be positive since

                               ΔºG  =  -nFEºcell
