You are given a rectangular sheet of cardboard that measures 11 in. by 8.5 in. (see the diagram below). A small square of the sa

me size is cut from each corner, and each side folded up along the cuts to from a box with no lid.
1. Anya thinks the cut should be 1.5 inches to create the greatest volume, while Terrence thinks it should be 3 inches.

Explain how both students can determine the formula for the volume of the box.
Determine which student's suggestion would create the larger volume.
Explain how there can be two different volumes when each student starts with the same size cardboard.
2. Why is the value of x limited to 0 in. < x < 4.25 in.?

Answer:

Part 1) Anya's box will have larger volume as compared to Terence's box

Part 2) see the explanation

Part 3) see the explanation

Step-by-step explanation:

The picture of the question in the attached figure

Part 1) Explain how both students can determine the formula for the volume of the box.

Determine which student's suggestion would create the larger volume

we know that

The volume of the box is given by the formula

V=LWH

we have

L=(11-2x)\ in\\W=(8.5-2x)\ in\\H=x\ in

Anya

we have

x=1.5 in

so

L=(11-2(1.5))=8\ in\\W=(8.5-2(1.5))=5.5\ in\\H=1.5\ in

substitute in the formula of volume

V=(8)(5.5)(1.5)=66\ in^3

Terrence

we have

x=3 in

so

L=(11-2(3))=5\ in\\W=(8.5-2(3))=2.5\ in\\H=3\ in

substitute in the formula of volume

V=(5)(2.5)(3)=37.5\ in^3

Hence,

Anya's box will have larger volume as compared to Terence's box

Part 2) Explain how there can be two different volumes when each student starts with the same size cardboard

The box's size depends on the length/width/height of the cardboard being cut, which is why different measurements / cutting methods for the same size cardboard can result in different box sizes.

Part 3)  Why is the value of x limited to 0 in. < x < 4.25 in.?

The square would be cut from all four corners, therefore the sum of the 2 length sides of the squares on the cardboard cannot exceed the short side of the cardboard. The shorter side of the cardboard is 8.5 inches, divided by 2 = 4.25 inches, hence the length side of the squares cannot  be larger than 4.25 inches

You and a friend each randomly draw a card from a standard deck. What is the probability that at least one of you is holding a f
Andreyy89

Answer:

0.24

Step-by-step explanation:

Total cards = 52

Face cards = heart {K,Q,J} , Spade {K,Q,J} , Club {K,Q,J} , Diamond{K,Q,J} = 12

Now we are given that You and a friend each randomly draw a card from a standard deck.

Probability that no one getting face card:

Favorable events = total cards - face cards = 52 -12= 40

Total cards = 52

So, probability that no one is getting face card = \frac{40}{52} =0.76

Now we are supposed to find the probability that at least one of you is holding a face card

So, probability = 1 - probability that no one is getting face card

                        =1 - 0.76

                        = 0.24

So, probability that at least one of you is holding a face card is 0.24

The amount of rhubarb in the original recipe is 3 1/2 cups. Using what you know of whole numbers and what you know of fractions,
Alexxx [7]
The easiest way, I think, is to convert the mixed number into an improper fraction, then multiply by 3.
3 1/2 = 7/2
7/2 · 3 = 21/2
now just change the improper fraction back to a mixed number by dividing and putting the remainder into fraction form
21/2 = 10 1/2

You could also multiply the whole number by 3 and the fraction by 3, ending up with 9 3/2, but then have to convert the improper fraction into a mixed number
3/2 = 1 1/2
then add the numbers together
9 + 1 1/2 = 10 1/2
either way works, whatever is easiest for you.

An individual is hosting a cookout for the kick ball team. The individual wants to have two hot dogs for each guest, and 6 extra
hoa [83]

Answer:

Option 2) y = 26

Step-by-step explanation:

We are given the following in the question:

The individual wants to have two hot dogs for each guest, and 6 extra hot logs in case some teammates bring friends.

Thus, the dependent variable is the number of hot dogs.

\text{y: Number of hot dogs}

The independent variable is the number of teammates.

\text{x: Number of teammates}}

Thus, the linear relation between the dependent and the independent variable is given as:

y(x) = 2x + 6

We have to find the value of dependent variable when independent variable is 10

For x = 10

y(10) = 2(10) + 6 = 26

Thus, the correct answer is

Option 2) y = 26

In circle A shown, BC || DE , mBC=58° and mDE=142°. Determine the measure of ZCFE . Show how you arrived at your answer.
AysviL [449]

Answer:

< CFE = 40°

Step-by-step explanation:

To better understand the solution, see attachment for the diagram.

Given:

BC parallel to DE

Measure of Arc BD = 58°

Measure of Arc DE = 142°

First step: Draw a diameter that passes through the centre of the circle and name it. In this case, the diameter is line ST.

The line ST divides the arc BD and arc DE into half.

That is:

Arc SC = 1/2(arc BC) =1/2(58)

Arc SC = 29°

Arc TE = 1/2(arc DE) =1/2(142)

Arc TE = 71°

Arc SC + Arc CE + Arc TE = 180° (Sum of angles in a semicircle

29° + Arc CE  + 71° = 180°

Arc CE + 100° = 180°

Arc CE = 180-100

Arc CE = 80°

Inscribed angle = 1/2(intercepted angle)

<CFE = 1/2(Arc CE )

<CFE = 1/2(80)

< CFE = 40°
