Devon wants to write an equation for a line that passes through 2 of the data points he has collected. The points are (8, 5) and

(–12, –9). He writes the equation 7x – 10y = 3. Is this a good model? Explain your reasoning.

(8,5)(-12,-9)
slope = (-9 - 5) / (-12 - 8) = -14/-20 = 7/10

y = mx + b
slope(m) = 7/10
use either of ur points.....(8,5)....x = 8 and y = 5
now we sub and find b, the y int
5 = 7/10(8) + b
5 = 56/10 + b
5 - 56/10 = b
50/10 - 56/10 = b
-3/5 = b

so ur equation is : y = 7/10x - 3/5.....now we put it in standard form

y = 7/10x - 3/5...multiply by 10
10y = 7x - 6.....subtract 7x
-7x + 10y = -6....multiply by -1
7x - 10y = 6

So.....7x - 10y = 3.... IS NOT a good model. Because ur points are not a solution to ur equation.

Step-by-step explanation: (8,5)(-12,-9)slope = (-9 - 5) / (-12 - 8) = -14/-20 = 7/10y = mx + bslope(m) = 7/10use either of ur points.....(8,5)....x = 8 and y = 5now we sub and find b, the y int5 = 7/10(8) + b5 = 56/10 + b5 - 56/10 = b50/10 - 56/10 = b-3/5 = bso ur equation is : y = 7/10x - 3/5.....now we put it in standard formy = 7/10x - 3/5...multiply by 1010y = 7x - 6.....subtract 7x-7x + 10y = -6....multiply by -17x - 10y = 6So.....7x - 10y = 3.... Jessica is 5 years older than her sister Jenna. Jenna tells her sister that in 5 years, she will be as old as Jessica was 5 year
emmasim [6.3K]
                          Jenna's age                   Jessica's age

today                         x                               x + 5

in 5 years                 x+5

5 years ago                                                   x + 5 - 5

Equality                  x + 5 = x + 5 - 5

=> x + 5 = x

The equation is x + 5 = x

That equation has not any solution, because it reduces to 5 = 0, which is an absurd.

So, the conclusion is that information given by Jenna is wrong.

It is logical: if the difference of the ages is 5, in five years Jenna will have 10 years more than what her sister had 5 years ago, no 5 as she told Jessica.
