The chemical symbol for sodium bicarbonate is NaHCO₃. Its molar mass is calculated by adding the product of the molar mass of each of the component and the number of moles. That is,

   molar mass of NaHCO₃ = (1 mol Na)(23 g Na/1 mol Na) + (1 mol H)(1 g H/ 1 mol H) + (1 mol C)(12 g C/1 mol C) + (3 mol O)(16 g O/1 mol O)
    molar mass of NaHCO₃ = 84 g/mol

Same is to be done with sodium carbonate which has a molar mass of Na₂CO₃
  molar mass of Na₂CO₃ = (2 mol Na)(23 g Na/1 mol Na) + (1 mol C)(12 g C/1 mol C) + (3 mol O)(16 g O/1 mol O)
   molar mass of Na₂CO₃ = 106 g/mol

The decomposition of sodium bicarbonate to sodium carbonate is shwon below,
    2NaHCO₃ --> Na₂CO₃ + H₂O + CO₂

Through conversion factors and dimensional analysis,
(1.678 g NaHCO₃)(1 mol NaHCO₃/84 g NaHCO₃)(1 mol Na₂CO₃/2 mol NaHCO₃)(106 g NaHCO₃/1 mol NaHCO₃)
     = 1.06 g Na₂CO₃

ANSWER: 1.06 g Na₂CO₃

Which substance can be broken down by chemical means?
(1) CO (3) Ca
(2) Ce (4) Cu
Gala2k [10]

The substance that can be broken down by chemical means from the choices given is CO (Carbon monoxide).

Carbon monoxide is a compound made up of carbon and oxygen and can therefore be broken by chemical means.

Further Explanation

Pure substances

  • Pure substances are substances that have a constant composition and also cannot broken down into simpler substances using physical means.
  • Pure substances are classified as either elements or compounds.

Elements

  • Elements are a type of pure substances that are made up of one type of atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances by both chemical and physical means.
  • Atoms making up a certain element are similar or identical in properties. Examples of elements are, Oxygen, sodium, calcium, etc. Periodic table shows an arrangement of all known elements.

Compound

  • A compound is a pure substance that is made up of than one type of atoms of different elements and can be broken down into individual elements making it using chemical means.
  • Compounds cannot be broken down into simpler substances by physical means but only using chemical means. Compounds have constant composition and therefore they have a constant ratio of elements. For example the ratio of elements making up carbon dioxide is always 27% Carbon and 73% Oxygen.
  • Examples of compounds include, water, Ammonia, calcium sulfate, carbon dioxide, etc.
  • In our case, Carbon monoxide, (CO) is a compound made up of a carbon atom and an oxygen atom. Other choices, Ca, Ce, and Cu are all elements.

A sample of an unknown substance has a mass of .158 kg if 2,510 J of heat is required to heat the substance from 32°C to 61°C wh
ziro4ka [17]

Answer: 0.548J/g°C

Explanation:

Q = s × m × DeltaT

Q = Heat (J)

S = Specific Heat Capacity

M = mass (g)

DeltaT = Change in temperature (°C)

0.158Kg x 1000 = 158g

2.510J = s x 158g x (61°C-32°C)

2.510J/(158g x 29°C) = s

S = 0.54779.... J/g°C

S = 0.548 J/g°C

Percentage yield of sodium peroxide if 5 g of sodium oxide produces 5.5 g of sodium peroxide
Rama09 [41]

Answer:

87.40 %

Explanation:

Concept being tested: Percent yield of a product

We are given;

Mass of Sodium oxide 5 g

Experimental or Actual yield of sodium peroxide IS 5.5 g

We are required to calculate the percent yield of sodium peroxide;

The equation for the reaction that forms sodium peroxide is

2Na₂O + O₂ → 2Na₂O₂

Step 1; moles of sodium oxide

Moles = mass ÷ molar mass

Molar mass of sodium oxide is 61.98 g/mol

Therefore;

Moles = 5 g ÷ 61.98 g/mol

          = 0.0807 moles

Step 2: Theoretical moles of sodium peroxide produced

From the equation, 2 moles of sodium oxide produces 1 mole of sodium peroxide.

Thus, moles of sodium peroxide used is 0.0807 moles

Step 3: Theoretical mass of sodium peroxide used

Mass = Number of moles × Molar mass

Molar mass of sodium peroxide = 77.98 g/mol

Therefore;

Theoretical mass = 0.0807 moles × 77.98 g/mol

                            = 6.293 g

Theoretical mass of Na₂O₂ is 6.293 g

Step 4: Percent yield of Na₂O₂

  • We know that percent yield is given by the ratio of actual yield to theoretical yield expressed as a percentage.

Percent yield=(\frac{Actual yield}{theoretical yield})100

Percent yield(Na_{2}O_{2})=(\frac{5.5g}{6.293g})100

                       = 87.40 %

Therefore, the percentage yield of sodium peroxide is 87.4%

Explain why groups 14 and 15 are better representatives of mixed groups than groups 13 and 16
Brrunno [24]

Answer;

Groups 14 and 15 each contain metals, nonmetals, and metalloids while Group 13 contains metals and a metalloid, and Group 16 contains metalloids and nonmetals.

Explanation;

  • Groups 13–16 of the periodic table contain one or more metalloids, in addition to metals, nonmetals, or both.
  • Unlike other groups of the periodic table, which contain elements in one class, groups 13–16 referred to as mixed groups contain elements in at least two different classes. In addition to metalloids, they also contain metals, nonmetals, or both.
  • Group 14 also known as the carbon group contains carbon which is a non metal, silicon and germanium which are metalloids and tin and lead which are metals.
  • Group 15 also known as the Nitrogen group contains non metals such as oxygen, metalloid tellurium and a metal polonium.
