Area covered by vegetables is Y

X/Y = 3/5
5X = 3Y

X + Y = 1600
X + 5/3X = 1600 
8/3X = 1600

X = 1600 * 3 / 8 = 600 Sq Yards

The above method seemed the most obvious method to me. One could use the quadratic formula, but that seems to involve more operations.

... x = ±(√128)/4 = ±√8 = ±2√2 . . . . . simplify the result
