Answer:

61 commuters must be randomly selected to estimate the mean driving time of Chicago commuters.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given : We want 95% confidence that the sample mean is within 3 minutes of the population mean, and the population standard deviation is known to be 12 minutes.

To find : How many commuters must be randomly selected to estimate the mean driving time of Chicago commuters?

Solution :

At 95% confidence the z-value is z=1.96

The sample mean is within 3 minutes of the population mean i.e. margin of error is E=3 minutes

The population standard deviation is s=12 minutes

n is the number of sample

The formula of margin of error is given by,

E=\frac{s\times z}{\sqrt{n}}

Substitute the value in the formula,

3=\frac{12\times 1.96}{\sqrt{n}}

3=\frac{23.52}{\sqrt{n}}

\sqrt{n}=\frac{23.52}{3}

\sqrt{n}=7.84

Squaring both side,

n=61.4656

Therefore, 61 commuters must be randomly selected to estimate the mean driving time of Chicago commuters.

A pound of oranges costs $2 less than a pound of pears. Together, ten pounds of oranges and eight pounds of pears cost $61. How
Thepotemich [5.8K]

Let us say that:

o = cost of oranges per pound

p = cost of pears per pound

so that:

o = p – 2

Therefore:

10o + 8p = 61

10 (p – 2) + 8p = 61

10p – 20 + 8p = 61

18p = 81

p = 4.5

p = $4.5 per pound

So 3 pounds of pears would cost:

total cost = 3 * 4.5

total cost = $13.5

Solve for x:<br> 3(5x + 10) + 10 = 6x - (x + 10)
34kurt

Answer:

x= -5

Step-by-step explanation:

3(5x+10)+10=6x-(x+10)

15x+30+10=6x-x-10

15x+40=5x-10

15x-5x=-10-40

10x=-50

x=-5

Gary used landscape timbers to create a border around a garden shaped like a right triangle. The longest two timbers he used are
Cloud [144]

Answer:

9 feet

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

The border of the garden is a right angled triangle.

Two lengths are given as 12 ft and 15 ft.

Let the length of the shortest timber be 'x' feet.

Now, in a right angled triangle, the longest length is called the hypotenuse.

As 15 feet is the largest length, it is the hypotenuse of the triangle. Now, applying Pythagoras theorem, we get:

(Leg1)^2+(Leg2)^2=(Hypotenuse)^2\\x^2+12^2=15^2\\x^2+144=225\\x^2=225-144\\x^2=81\\x=\pm \sqrt{81}=\pm 9

The negative value is neglected as length can never be negative.

Therefore, the length of the shortest timber is 9 feet.
