Answer:

The red pens are 168.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

In a box of pens, 2/7 of them are red. of the remaining pens 1/6 of them are blue and the rest are black. there are 280 more black pens than blue pens.

Now, to find the red pens in the box.

Let the total pens be x.

Red pens be \frac{2}{7} of x =\frac{2x}{7}

Remaining pens = x-\frac{2x}{7} =\frac{5x}{7}

So, blue pens = \frac{1}{6} of \frac{5x}{7} =\frac{5x}{42}

Now, black pens = x-(blue +red)

Black pens = x-\frac{2x}{7}+\frac{5x}{42}

According to question:

Black pens = Blue pens + 280

x-\frac{2x}{7}+\frac{5x}{42}=\frac{5x}{42}+280

x-\frac{17x}{42}=\frac{5x}{42}+280

x-\frac{22x}{42}=280

20\frac{x}{42}=280

x=\frac{280\times 42}{20}

<em>On solving we get:</em>

x=588

So, red pens = \frac{2x}{7}=\frac{2\times 588}{7}

                      =168.

Therefore, the red pens are 168.

=(5)(34)

=170

To find : Explain why both Jenna and Mia arrived at the same answer and the advantage of one method over the other ?

Solution :

The method of both were different but correct.

One apply distributive property and other apply direct calculation.

So, both Jenna and Mia arrived at the same answer

But Mia's method have one advantage that the steps became less than Jenna's method.
