Question:

The following tabulated data were gathered from a series of Charpy impact tests on a commercial low-carbon steel alloy.

Temperature(∘C)50403020100-10-20-30-40Impact energy (J)76767158382314951.5

(a) Plot the data as impact energy versus temperature.

(b) Determine a ductile-to-brittle transition temperature as the temperature corresponding to the average of the maximum and minimum impact energies.

(c) Determine a ductile-to-brittle transition temperature as the temperature at which the impact energy is 20 J.

Answer:

a)  see the attached graph

b) max E = 76 and Min E =1.53 average = 77.5/2 = 38.75 J

this corresponds to about 10° C

c ) at E = 20 J temperature is about -2°C

The data is missing in the question and it is;

The following tabulated data were gathered from a series of Charpy impact tests on a commercial low-carbon steel alloy.

Temperature (°C) 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 0, -10, -20, -30, -40

Impact Energy (J) 76, 76, 71, 58, 38, 23, 14, 9, 5, 1.5

Answer:

A) Graph is attached

B) Temperature corresponding to the average of the maximum and minimum impact energies is approximately 10°C

C) The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature is approximately -2°C

Explanation:

A) I have plot the graph in the attachment.

B) For us to find the average temperature corresponding to the average of the maximum and minimum impact energies, we need to know the maximum and minimum impact energies first.

Inspecting the values in the question, the maximum is 76J while the minimum is 1.5J.

Thus their average is = (76 + 1.5)/2 = 77.5/2 = 38.75J

So,tracing 38.75J on the y-axis of the graph i attached, the corresponding temperature is approximately 10°C

C) Tracing 20J on the y-axis of the graph i attached, the corresponding temperature is approximately - 2°C
