5.5 A scraper with a 275 hp diesel engine will be used to excavate and haul earth for a highway project. An evaluation of the jo

b-site conditions indicates the scraper will operate 40 min./hr. For this project it is anticipated that the total cycle time will be 20 min. for a round trip. Previous job records show the scraper operated at full power for the 1.5 min. required to fill the bowl of the scraper and at 80% of the rated hp for the balance of the cycle time. Calculate the gallons per hour for fuel consumption of the scraper.

Answer: Fuel consumption per hour of the scrapper is 6 gal/hr

Explanation:

Given that;

Rated power = 275 hP

The scraper will work = 40min per hr

anticipated total cycle time = 20min

Previous Scrapper operated full power for 1.5min at 80% hP

First we find the Engine factor;

filling the bucket =  1.5/20 * 100% = 0.075

rest of cycle = (20-1.5)/20 * 80% =  0.74

so total engine factor = 0.075 + 0.74 = 0.815

now Time factor will be 40/60 = 0.6666 =

therefore operating factor = 0.6666 * 0.815 = 0.543

Now we know that for a diesel engine, a range fuel consumption = 0.04 gal/hP

so

Fuel consumption per hour of the scrapper is;

= 0.543 * 275 * 0.04

= 5.97 = 6 gal/hr

A 227 pound compressor is supported by four legs that contact the floor of a machine shop. At the bottom of each leg there is a
Ganezh [65]

Answer:

1.312 in

Explanation:

Data provided in the question:

Weight of the compressor, W = 227 pound

Number of legs = 4

Maximum pressure = 42 psi

Now,

Let F be the force taken by the legs

Therefore,

W = 4F

or

227 pound = 4F

or

F = 56.75 pounds

Also,

Force = Pressure × Area

or

56.75 pounds = 42 psi × πr²                      [ r is the diameter of one leg]

or

r² = 0.4301

or

r = 0.656

therefore,

diameter = 2r = 2 × 0.656

= 1.312 in

CHALLENGE ACTIVITY 1.4.1: Basic syntax errors. Type the statements. Then, correct the one syntax error in each statement. Hints:
Lunna [17]

Answer:

Lets check each statement for the errors.

Explanation:

System.out.println("Predictions are hard.");

This statement has no syntax errors. When this statement is executed the following line will be displayed:

Predictions are hard.

System.out.print("Especially ');

This statement is missing the closing quotation mark. A single quotation mark is placed instead of double quotation mark in the statement.

The following error message will be displayed when this program statement will be compiled:

Main.java:15: error: unclosed string literal

String literals use double quotes. So to correct this syntax error, the statement should be changed as follows:

System.out.print("Especially");

The output of this corrected line is as following:

Especially

System.out.println("about the future.").

In this line a period . is placed at the end of the statement instead of a semicolon ; but according to the syntax rules statements should end in semicolons.

The error message displayed when this line is compiled is as following:

Main.java:15: error: ; expected

Main.java:15: error: not a statement

So in order to correct this syntax error the statement should be changed as following:

System.out.println("about the future.");

The output of this corrected line is as following:

about the future

System.out.println("Num is: " - userName);

There is a syntax error in this statement because of - symbol used instead of +

+ symbol is used to join together a variable and a value a variable and another variable in a single print statement.

The error message displayed when this line is compiled is as following:

Main.java:13: error: bad operand types for binary operator '-'

So in order to correct this syntax error the statement should be changed as following:

System.out.println("Num is: " + userName);

This line will print two things one is the string Num is and the other is the value stored in userName variable.

So let userName= 5 then the output of this corrected line is as following:

Num is: 5

Consider film condensation on a vertical plate. Will the heat flux be higher at the top or at the bottom of the plate? Why?
STALIN [3.7K]

Answer:

During film condensation on a vertical plate, heat flux at the top will be higher since the thickness of the film at the top, and thus its thermal resistance, is lower.

Refrigerant-134a enters a diffuser steadily as saturated vapor at 600 kPa with a velocity of 160 m/s, and it leaves at 700 kPa a
Zina [86]

Answer:

a) V_2 = 82.1 m/s

b) m = 0.298 Kg/s

Explanation:

from A-11 to A-13 we have the following data

P_1 = 600 kpa

V_1 = 0.033925 m^3/kg

h_1 = 262.52 kJ/kg

P_2 = 700 kpa

V_2 = 0.0313 m^3/kg

T_2 = 40°C = 313K

h_2 = 278.66 kJ/kg

Now, from the conversation of mass,

A_2*V_2/u_2 = A_1*V_1/u_1

V_2 = A_1/A_2*u_2/u_1*V_1

V_2 = A_1/1.8*A_1 * 0.0313 /0.033925*160

V_2 = 82.1 m/s

now from the energy balance equation

E_in = E_out

Q_in + m(h_1 + V_1^2/2) =  m(h_2 + V_2^2/2)

m = 0.298 Kg/s

A water initially contains 40 mg · L−1 of Mg2+. The pH of the water is increased until the concentration of hydroxide ion (OH−)
Darya [45]

Answer:

concentration of Mg ion  = 0.0122 g/L

Explanation:

Given data;

initial concentration of Magnesium in water is 40 mg/l

concentration of (OH^-) = 0.001000

we have dissociation reaction  Magnesium dioxide

Mg(OH)_2 \rightarrow Mg^{2+} +  2OH^{-}

from above reaction we can conclude

concentration of Mg(OH)_2 = \frac{OH}{2} = \frac{.0010}{2} = 0.0005 M

Mass of magnesium ion is calculated as = Mg mole * molar mass of magnesium

concentration of Mg ion = 0.0005*24.305 g/mol = 0.0122 g/L
