A Federation starship (8.5 ✕ 106 kg) uses its tractor beam to pull a shuttlecraft (1.0 ✕ 104 kg) aboard from a distance of 14 km

away. The tractor beam exerts a constant force of 4.0 ✕104 N on the shuttlecraft. Both spacecraft are initially at rest. How far does the starship move as it pulls the shuttlecraft aboard?

Refer to the diagram shown below.

m₁ = 8.5 x 10⁶ kg, the mass of the starship
m₂ = 10⁴ kg, the mass of the shuttlecraft
a₁ = the acceleration of the starship
a₂ = the acceleration of the shuttle
F = 4 x 10⁴ N, the pulling force

Let y = distance traveled by the starship
Let x = distance traveled by the shuttlecraft
If t = the time of travel, then
y = 0.5a₁t²                  (1)
x = 0.5a₂t²                  (2)

F = m₁a₁ = m₂a₂         (3)
Also,
x + y = 14000 m          (4)

From (2), obtain
a₁ = (4 x 10⁴ N)/(8.5 x 10⁶ kg) = 4.706 x 10⁻³ m/s²
a₂ = (4 x 10⁴ N)/(10⁴ kg) = 4 m/s²

From (1), (2) and (4), obtain
0.5*(t s)²*(4 + 4.706 x 10⁻³ m/s²) = 14000 m
2.002353t² = 14000
t² = 6991.774 s²
t = 83.617 s

Therefore
x = 0.5*4*6991.774 = 13984 m = 13.984 km
y = 0.5*4.706 x 10⁻³*6991.774 = 16.452 m

The starship moves only about 16.5 m while pulling in the shuttlecraft by 13.98 km.

Answer: The starship moves by 16.5 m (nearest tenth)

You are on vacation in San Francisco and decide to take a cable car to see the city. A 5800-kgkg cable car goes 260 mm up a hill
Stella [2.4K]

Answer:

4.325\times10^6J

Explanation:

Mass of the cable car, m = 5800 kg

It goes 260 m up a hill, along a slope of \theta=17^o

Therefore vertical elevation of the car = 260sin\theta=260sin17^o=76.0166m

Now, when you get into the cable car, it's velocity is zero, that is, initial kinetic energy is zero (since K.E. = \frac{1}{2} mv^2). Similarly as the car reaches the top, it halts and hence final kinetic energy is zero.

Therefore the only possible change in the cable car system is the change in it's gravitational potential energy.

Hence, total change in energy = mgh = 5800\times9.81\times76.0166J=4.325\times10^6J

where, g = acceleration due to gravity

h = height/vertical elevation

When carrying extra weight, the space formed between the top of your head and the two axles of the motorcycle is referred to as
Dafna11 [192]
When carrying extra weight, the space formed between the top of your head and the two axles of the motorcycle is called "load triangle". Because of a motorcycle's size and weight and the fact that it has only two wheels, how to carry extra load is very important. One has to make sure that they are keeping the weight low and close to the middle of the motorcycle and keep the load evenly from side to side. Heavier items should be in the "load triangle".

Rank the following situations according to the magnitude of the impulse of the net force, from largest value to smallest value.
wolverine [178]

Answer:

V

I and II

III and IV

Explanation:

The impulse is equal to the change in momentum of the object involved, so we can calculate the change in momentum in each situation and compare them all.

Taking always east as positive direction, and labelling

u the initial velocity

v the final velocity

m = 1000 kg the mass (which is always equal)

We find:

(i)

u = 25 m/s

v = 0

|I|=m(v-u)=(1000)(0-25)=25,000 Ns

(II)

u = 25 m/s

v = 0

|I|=m(v-u)=(1000)(0-25)=25,000 Ns

(III)

In this case,

F = 2000 N is the force

\Delta t = 10 s is the time

So the magnitude of the impulse is

|I| =F\Delta t = (2000N)(10)=20,000 Ns

(IV)

F = 2000 N is the force

\Delta t = 10 s is the time

So the magnitude of the impulse is

|I| =F\Delta t = (2000N)(10)=20,000 Ns

(V)

u = 25 m/s

v = -25 m/s

|I|=m(v-u)=(1000)(-25-25)=50,000 Ns

So the ranking from largest to smallest is:

V

I and II

III and IV

A student heats a liquid on a burner. What happens to the portion of liquid that first begins to warm? What all applys
jeyben [28]
For water, as the temperature goes up the density of the liquid water decreases therefore it becomes less dense so it tends to rise upward. And since the temperature here is higher, heat flows from the higher temperature to the lower so it releases energy to the environment. Therefore, the correct statements are 2, 3 and 5.
