Let's find the girl's reading rate:  It is:

30 pages
------------ = 3 3/4 pages per day = 3.75 pages/day
 8 days

It takes her 28 days to read her novel.  To find out how many pages the novel has, we write out:

    28 days
--------------------  = # of pages = 105 pages
      1 day
     --------------
    3.75 pages

Another way in which to do this may be shorter and simpler:  Write and solve the equation of two ratios:

  30 pages            p
--------------- = -------------
   8 days          28 days

Then 30(28) = 8p, and p = # of pages in novel = 105

P(A) = 0.4 · 0.4 = 0.16  ( 16 % )
2) he makes 1 st shot + he misses 2nd shot
P(B) = 0.4 · 0.6 = 0.24   ( 24 % )
3) he misses 1st shot and he has no more attempts
P (C) = 0.6 ( 60 %)
0.16 · 2 + 0.24 · 1 + 0.6 · 0 = 0.32 + 0.34 = 0.56
The expected value is 0.56 points.
