Colby is testing the effectiveness of a new allergy medication. There are 100 people with allergies in the study. Sixty-two pati

ents received the allergy medication, and 38 other patients did not receive treatment. Fifty of the patients who received the medication reported no allergies at the end of the study. Twenty of the patients who did not receive medication reported no allergies at the end of the study. What is the probability that a patient chosen at random from this study took the medication, given that they reported no allergies?

Answer: \frac{5}{7}

Step-by-step explanation:

Here, the size of sample space = 100 patient.

Let M shows the event that the patients received the allergy medication,

M' shows the event that the patients do not received the allergy medication,

And, N shows the event that the patient does not has the allergy.

Thus, According to the question,

P(M)=\frac{62}{100} = 0.62

P(M')=\frac{38}{100} = 0.38

P(N)=\frac{50+20}{100} = \frac{70}{100}=0.70 ( Because, Total number of patient who do not have allergy = total patients who received the medication reported no allergies at the end of the study + total patients who did not receive medication reported no allergies at the end of the study)

P(M\cap N) = \frac{50}{100}=0.5

P(M'\cap N) = \frac{20}{100}=0.2

Thus, the probability that a patient chosen at random from this study took the medication, given that they reported no allergies,

P(\frac{M}{N} ) = \frac{P(M\cap N)}{P(N)}

⇒ P(\frac{M}{N} ) = \frac{0.5}{0.7}=\frac{5}{7}

Simply put, since we are *given* that the person reported no allergy, the group of interest is 50 medicated and 20 non-medicated

tim estimates that 60÷5.7 is about 10. Will the actual quotient be greater then or less than 10? explain
lana66690 [7]
The actual quotient will be greater than 10 because 60 divided by 5 is 12, so the answer will be between 10 and 12, so it will be greater than 10

9. Gold miners in Alaska have found, on average, 12 ounces of gold per 1000 tons of dirt excavated with a standard deviation of
netineya [11]

Answer:

9.18% probability the miners find more than 16 ounces of gold in the next 1000 tons of dirt excavated

Step-by-step explanation:

Problems of normally distributed samples are solved using the z-score formula.

In a set with mean \mu and standard deviation \sigma, the zscore of a measure X is given by:

Z = \frac{X - \mu}{\sigma}

The Z-score measures how many standard deviations the measure is from the mean. After finding the Z-score, we look at the z-score table and find the p-value associated with this z-score. This p-value is the probability that the value of the measure is smaller than X, that is, the percentile of X. Subtracting 1 by the pvalue, we get the probability that the value of the measure is greater than X.

In this problem, we have that:

\mu = 12, \sigma = 3

What is the probability the miners find more than 16 ounces of gold in the next 1000 tons of dirt excavated?

This is 1 subtracted by the pvalue of Z when X = 16. So

Z = \frac{X - \mu}{\sigma}

Z = \frac{16 - 12}{3}

Z = 1.33

Z = 1.33 has a pvalue of 0.9082

1 - 0.9082 = 0.0918

9.18% probability the miners find more than 16 ounces of gold in the next 1000 tons of dirt excavated
