Answer:

B₂H₆

Explanation:

Given parameters:

Mass percentage of hydrogen = 21.86%

Mass percentage of boron = 78.14%

Temperature of the compound = 27°C

Pressure exerted by the gas = 1.12atm

Volume of the gas = 74.3mL = 0.0743L or 0.0743dm³

Mass of the gas = 0.0934g

Unknown:

Molecular formula of the gas = ?

We have to convert the temperature to a unit we can work with which is Kelvin:

      27°C to K gives 273 + 27, which is 300K

Solution

  • From the mass percentages, we can derive the empirical formula of the compound.

      The empirical formula is the simplest formula of a compound.

The procedure is shown below:

                                                      B                                      H

Mass precentage                       78.14                                21.86

Number of moles                   78.14/10.8                           21.86/1

                                                    7.24                                  21.86

Dividing by the

smallest                                    7.24/7.24                          21.86/7.24

                                                        1                                         3

The empirical formula of the compound is BH₃

To derive the molecular formula:

               M.F = (E.F) x n

n is the number of repeating units of the empirical formula present in one mole.

  • To find the molecular formula of the gas, we use the ideal gas law to obtain the number of moles of the gas. We then proceed to find the molar mass.

          ideal gas law:  PV = nRT

     The unknown is n, and we make it the subject of the expression:

                            n = \frac{PV}{RT}

Where P is pressure of the gas

            V is the volume of the gas

            R is the gas constant which is given as 0.082atmdm³mol⁻¹K⁻¹

            T is the temperature

         n = \frac{1.12 x 0.0743}{0.082 x 300}

         n = 0.0034mole

  From the expression:

                 number of moles = \frac{mass}{molar mass}

                 molar mass = \frac{mass}{number of moles}

                 molar mass = \frac{0.0934}{0.0034}

                 molar mass =  27.5g/mol of the molecular formula

From M.F = (E.F) x n we need to solve for n:

    E.F is BH₃ this gives a mass of [10.8 + 3(1)] = 13.8g/mol

     n = \frac{molecular mass of the molecular formula}{molecular mass of the empirical formula}

     n = \frac{27.5}{13.8} = 2

Molecular formula of the compound is then (BH₃)₂ which gives B₂H₆

Nickel can be plated from aqueous solution according to the following half reaction. How long would it take (in min) to plate 29
andrey2020 [161]

Answer:

It take 3.5 *10² min

Explanation:

Step 1: Data given

Mass of the nickel = 29.6 grams

4.7A

Step 2: The balanced equation

Ni2+ (aq- +2e- → Ni(s)

Step 3: Calculate time

W = (ItA)/(n*F)

  ⇒ W = weight of plated metal in grams = 29.6

 ⇒ I = current in coulombs per second. = 4.7

 ⇒ t = time in seconds.

 ⇒ A = atomic weight of the metal in grams per mole. = 58.69

 ⇒ n = valence of dissolved metal in solution in equivalents per mole.  = 2

 ⇒ F = Faraday's constant in coulombs per equivalent. F = 96,485.309               coulombs/equivalent.

29.6 = (4.7 * t * 58.69)/(2*96485309)

t = 20707 seconds

t =345 minutes = 3.5 * 10² min

It take 3.5 *10² min

A sample of an ideal gas occupies 2.78 x 10^3 mL at 25°C and 760 mm Hg.
iris [78.8K]

Answer: It will occupy 4.45\times 10^3ml at the same temperature and 475 mm Hg.

Explanation:

Boyle's Law: This law states that pressure is inversely proportional to the volume of the gas at constant temperature and number of moles.

P\propto \frac{1}{V}     (At constant temperature and number of moles)

P_1V_1=P_2V_2    (At constant temperature and number of moles)

where,

P_1 = initial pressure of gas = 760 mm Hg

P_2 = final pressure of gas = 475 mm Hg

V_1 = initial volume of gas = 2.78\times 10^3ml

V_2  = final volume of gas = ?

Putting in the values:

760mm Hg\times 2.78\times 10^3ml=475 mm Hg\times V_2

V_2=4.45\times 10^3ml

Thus it will occupy 4.45\times 10^3ml at the same temperature and 475 mm Hg

Water treatment plants commonly use chlorination to destroy bacteria. a byproduct is chloroform (chcl3), a suspected carcinogen
antiseptic1488 [7]
<span>100. ppb of chcl3 in drinking water means  100 g of CHCl3 in 1,000,0000,000 g of water

Molarity, M

M = number of moles of solute / volume of solution in liters

number of moles of solute = mass of CHCl3 / molar mass of CHCl3

molar mass of CHCl3 = 119.37 g/mol

number of moles of solute = 100 g / 119.37 g/mol = 0.838 mol

using density of water = 1 g/ ml => 1,000,000,000 g = 1,000,000 liters

M = 0.838 / 1,000,000 = 8.38 * 10^ - 7 M <----- answer

Molality, m

m = number of moles of solute / kg of solvent

number of moles of solute = 0.838

kg of solvent = kg of water = 1,000,000 kg

m = 0.838 moles / 1,000,000 kg = 8.38 * 10^ - 7 m <----- answer

mole fraction of solute, X solute

X solute = number of moles of solute / number of moles of solution

number of moles of solute = 0.838

number of moles of solution = number of moles of solute + number of moles of solvent

number of moles of solvent = mass of water / molar mass of water = 1,000,000,000 g / 18.01528 g/mol = 55,508,435 moles

number of moles of solution = 0.838 moles + 55,508,435 moles = 55,508,436 moles

Hydrochloric acid (75.0 mL of 0.250 M) is added to 225.0 mL of 0.0550 M Ba(OH)2 solution. What is the concentration of the exces
Shalnov [3]

Answer:  The concentration of excess [OH^-] in solution is 0.017 M.

Explanation:

1. Molarity=\frac{moles}{\text {Volume in L}}

moles of HCl=Molarity\times {\text {Volume in L}}=0.250\times 0.075=0.019moles

1 mole of HCl give = 1 mole of H^+

Thus 0.019 moles of HCl give = 0.019 mole of H^+

2. moles of Ba(OH)_2=Molarity\times {\text {Volume in L}}=0.0550\times 0.225=0.012moles

According to stoichiometry:

1 mole of Ba(OH)_2 gives = 2 moles of OH^-

Thus 0.012 moles of Ba(OH)_2 give = 2 \times 0.012=0.024 moles of OH^-

H^++OH^-\rightarrow H_2O

As 1 mole of H^+ neutralize 1 mole of OH^-

0.019 mole of H^+ will neutralize 0.019 mole of OH^-

Thus (0.024-0.019)= 0.005 moles of OH^- will be left.

[OH^-]=\frac{\text {moles left}}{\text {Total volume in L}}=\frac{0.005}{0.3L}=0.017M

Thus molarity of [OH^-] in solution is 0.017 M.
