An apple with mass M is hanging at rest from the lower end of a light vertical rope. A dart of mass M/4 is shot vertically upwar

d, strikes the bottom of the apple, and remains embedded in it. If the speed of the dart is v₀ just before it strikes the apple, how high does the apple move upward because of its collision with the dart?

Answer:

The apple moves a height of h=\frac{v_{0}^2}{50g} because of its collision with the dart.

Explanation:

First <em>we need to calculate the velocity that the final mass gets</em> once the collision takes place, in order to do this, <em>we use momentum conservation</em>.

<u>The movement develops in a vertical line, so we use magnitudes</u>, and inicially only the dart is moving, but finally both masses embedded are in movement. We write

P_{i}=P_{f}\Leftrightarrow \frac{M}{4}v_{0}=\frac{5}{4}Mv

from here, we get the value for the <u>velocity of the final mass</u>, v, once the collision has been produced (an instant after)

v=\frac{v_{0}}{5}

Second, <u>with this final velocity, we can calculate the final altitude</u> that the mass will get, to do this we use <em>energy conservation</em>. An instant after the collision, the mass has kinetic energy, and we say that that is our altitude zero (or potencial energy zero), but when the mass gets to its higher altitude, the kinetic energy is zero and the potencial energy is different than zero, so we write the following equality

E_{i}=E_{f}\Leftrightarrow K_{i}=V_{f}\Leftrightarrow \frac{1}2}(\frac{5}{4}M)(\frac{v_{0}}{5})^2=(\frac{5}{4}M)gh

from where <em>we clear h, and get the answer to the question.</em>

<em>Wich is</em>

h=\frac{v_{0}^2}{50g}

Answer:

h = 1/50 v₀² g

Explanation:

This problem is of conservation of the moment, The system is formed by the two bodies, so the forces during the crash are internal and the moment is conserved.

Before the crash

     po = 0 + (m/4) vo

After the crash

     pf = (m + m/4) v

     pf = 5m/4  v

    m/4 vo = 5m/4 v

    v = 1/5 vo

This means that after the crash the bodies move at 1/5 of the initial speed

To calculate the maximum height we use the law of conservation of energy

Taste after the crash

     Em = K = ½ 5m / 4 v²

At the highest point

    Em = U = 5m/4  g h

   ½ 5m/4 v² = 5m/4   g h

    h = ½ v² / g

    h = ½ (1/5 v₀)² / g

    h = 1/50 v₀² g

Determine the values of m and n when the following mass of the Earth is written in scientific notation: 5,970,000,000,000,000,00
yuradex [85]

Explanation:

Mass of the Earth is equal to,

m=5,970,000,000,000,000,000,000,000\ kg

Any number can be written in the form of scientific notation as :

N=m\times 10^n

m is the real number

n is any integer

Mass of the earth can be written in the form of scientific notation as :

m=5.97\times 10^{24}\ m

Here,

m = 5.97

n = 24

Hence, this is the required solution.

|| Climbing ropes stretch when they catch a falling climber, thus increasing the time it takes the climber to come to rest and r
Otrada [13]

To solve this problem it is necessary to apply the concepts related to Newton's second law and the kinematic equations of movement description.

Newton's second law is defined as

F = ma

Where,

m = mass

a = acceleration

From this equation we can figure the acceleration out, then

a = \frac{F}{m}

a = \frac{11*10^3}{80}

a = 137.5m/s

From the cinematic equations of motion we know that

v_f^2-v_i^2 = 2ax

Where,

v_f =Final velocity

v_i =Initial velocity

a = acceleration

x = displacement

There is not Final velocity and the acceleration is equal to the gravity, then

v_f^2-v_i^2 = 2ax

0-v_i^2 = 2(-g)x

v_i =\sqrt{2gx}

v_i = \sqrt{2*9.8*4.8}

v_i = 9.69m/s

From the equation of motion where acceleration is equal to the velocity in function of time we have

a = \frac{v_i}{t}

t = \frac{v_i}{a}

t =\frac{9.69}{137.5}

t = 0.0705s

Therefore the time required is 0.0705s

A dog travels north for 18 meters, east for 8 meters, South for 27 meters and then west for 8 meters. What is the distance the d
Afina-wow [57]
I'm really not sure if this is right but I'll try.
The distance that the dog traveled is probably all of the distances added up. I would guess that it's 67 meters in total.
The displacement is a little more tricky but you pretty much have to put a mental map in your head. Since East and West are both 8 meters, they cancel each other out. He travels more southern and that means the displacement is 9 meters south of his original location

Ice fishermen sit on top of frozen lakes in the winter and catch fish in the liquid water below through holes cut in the ice she
melomori [17]

Answer:

This is because below 4°c, water unlike other materials becomes less dense when it's temperature is further lowered.

Explanation:

Due to the unusual nature of water; at about 4°c, the behavior of the density of water in relation to its temperature reverses. This means that water becomes less dense as it becomes colder below 4°c. The colder parts therefore floats to the top of the water body while the warmer part sinks allowing the top to freeze and the remaining body below to remain in its liquid state.

The freezing of the top of the lake alone protects the remaining depth of water from freezing by acting as an insulator and preventing further heat loss from the water to the ambient space. If this had not been the case, and water froze all through, marine lives will freeze to death and it will be more difficult to melt the ice come the next summer.

This behavior is due to the hydrogen bonding of the water molecules.
