Gold has always been a highly prized metal, widely used from the beginning of history as a store of value. It doesn\'t rust like

iron and doesn\'t become tarnished like silver. It is so chemically inert that it won\'t react even with the strongest concentrated acids. But it can be dissolved in aqua regia – a fresh-prepared mixture of concentrated HNO3 and HCl (1:3). When Germany invaded Denmark in World War II, the Hungarian chemist George de Hevesy dissolved the gold Nobel Prizes of Max von Laue and James Franck in aqua regia to prevent the Nazis from stealing them. He placed the jar with the solution on a shelf in his laboratory, and after the war, precipitated the gold out of the acid and returned it to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Nobel Foundation who recast the medals and again presented them to Laue and Franck. The unbalanced equation for the reaction of gold with aqua regia is given below. Add the stoichiometric coefficients to the equation to balance it.Au(s)+HNO3(aq)+HCl(aq)--> HAUCl4(aq)+NO2(g)+H20(l)What's the function of HCL?

Answer:

1Au(s) + 3HNO₃(aq) + 4HCl(aq) → 1HAuCl₄(aq) + 3NO₂(g) + 3H₂O(l)

The function of HCl is oxidize the gold.

Explanation:

It is possible to balance the reaction seeing each compound as a variable and take an equation for each atom, thus:

Au(s) + HNO₃(aq) + HCl(aq) → HAuCl₄(aq) + NO₂(g) + H₂O(l)

a       +       b         +      c      =        d            +    e       +    f

Au: a = d <em>(1)</em>

H: b + c = d + 2f <em>(2)</em>

N: b = e <em>(3)</em>

O: 3b = 2e + f <em>(4)</em>

Cl = c = 4d <em>(5)</em>

Assuming <em><u>a = 1</u></em>:

<em><u>1 = d</u></em> <em>(1)</em>

<u><em>c = 4</em></u> <em>(5)</em>

b + 3 = 2f <em>(2)</em>

3b = 2e + f <em>(4)</em>

As b = e:

b = f <em>(4)</em>

<em><u>f = 3</u></em>; <em><u>b = 3</u></em>; <em><u>e = 3</u></em>

Thus, balanced reaction is:

1Au(s) + 3HNO₃(aq) + 4HCl(aq) → 1HAuCl₄(aq) + 3NO₂(g) + 3H₂O(l)

<em>The function of HCl is oxidize the gold</em> that before reaction is Au⁰ and afte ris Au⁺³

I hope it helps!

Which correctly lists the three methods of heat transfer?
dalvyx [7]
Answer: conduction, convection, radiation

explanation: heats transferred using these three methods and all of them are used in different ways, convection is heat through solids, conduction being used as liquid/gas, radiation being used as electromagnetic waves.

hope this helped!!

One liter of ocean water contains 35.06 g of salt. What volume of ocean water would contain 1.00 kg of salt? Express your answer
sweet [91]

Answer:

28.52 L

Explanation:

First, let's calculate the density of the ocean, which is the mass divided by the volume:

d = m/V

d = 35.06/1

d = 35.06 g/L

So, for a mass of 1.00 kg = 1000.00 g

d = m/V

35.06 = 1000.00/V

V = 1000.00/35.06

V = 28.52 L

How all the data are expressed with two significant figures, the volume must also be expressed with two.

You are asked to bring the pH of 0.500L of 0.550 M NH4Cl to 7.00. Which of the following solutions would you use: 12.0 M HCl or
ch4aika [34]
<span>1 drop is approximately 0.05mL. Since 0.500L of 0.550M NH4Cl contains 0.275mol of substance (calculated by using c=n/V formula), equal amount of substance of NH3 is needed to neutralize this solution (since pH of 7 is neutral solution). Thus, we need 0.0275L of NH3, i.e. around 550 drops.</span>

Why did you blank with the 0.0020 M Fe(NO3)3 solution as opposed to just DI water? What does it do to your spectrum? What chemic
Vlad1618 [11]

Answer:

The cuvette was blank with the solution so that the spectrometer will only read the solute absorbance. This also ensures that the spectrometer will ignore other absorbance fluctuations that normally occur due to the chemical make-up of water. The spectrometer only considered the absorbance of FeNCS^{2+} as indicated on the spectrum. The reaction between the Fe^{3+} and the SCN^{-} are both clear liquids that form the orange liquid product  FeNCS^{2+} which creates the absorbance spectrum. Because the color of the solution is orange, it reflects this and similar colors while absorbing blueish hues. We can find the absorption of only the FeNCS^{2+} by pre-rinsing the cuvette with each solution we intend to measure before placing it in the spectrometer. Also, wipe each cuvette with a kimwipe to remove all fingerprints that could effect the data collection.
