A dry-cleaning solvent that contains only C, H, and Cl is suspected to be a cancercausing agent. When a 0.25-g sample was analyz

ed using combustion analysis, 0.451 g CO2 and 0.0617 g of H2O formed. Determine the empirical formula of this compound.

Answer:

The empirical formula is = C_3H_2Cl

Explanation:

Mass of water obtained = 0.0617 g

Molar mass of water = 18 g/mol

Moles of H_2O = 0.0617 g /18 g/mol = 0.003428 moles

2 moles of hydrogen atoms are present in 1 mole of water. So,

Moles of H = 2 x 0.003428 = 0.006856 moles

Molar mass of H atom = 1.008 g/mol

Mass of H in molecule = 0.006856 x 1.008 = 0.006911 g

Mass of carbon dioxide obtained = 0.451 g

Molar mass of carbon dioxide = 44.01 g/mol

Moles of CO_2 = 0.451 g /44.01 g/mol = 0.01025 moles

1 mole of carbon atoms are present in 1 mole of carbon dioxide. So,

Moles of C = 0.01025 moles

Molar mass of C atom = 12.0107 g/mol

Mass of C in molecule = 0.01025 x 12.0107 = 0.12311 g

Given that the dry-cleaning solvent only contains hydrogen, chlorine and carbon. So,

Mass of Cl in the sample = Total mass - Mass of C - Mass of H

Mass of the sample = 0.25 g

Mass of Cl in sample = 0.25 - 0.12311 - 0.006911 = 0.119979 g

Molar mass of Cl = 35.453 g/mol

Moles of Cl = 0.119979 / 35.453 = 0.003384 moles

Taking the simplest ratio for H, Cl and C as:

0.006856 : 0.003384 : 0.01025

= 2 : 1 : 3

The empirical formula is = C_3H_2Cl

Kaylis [27]

Physical changes occur when the properties of a substance are retained and/or the materials can be recovered after the change. Chemical changes involve the formation of a new substance. Formation of a gas, solid, light, or heat are possible evidence of chemical change.

You wish to make a buffer with pH 7.0. You combine 0.060 grams of acetic acid and 14.59 grams of sodium acetate and add water to
aleksandr82 [10.1K]

Answer:

The pH of the buffer is 7.0 and this pH is not useful to pH 7.0

Explanation:

The pH of a buffer is obtained by using H-H equation:

pH = pKa + log [A⁻] / [HA]

Where pH is the pH of the buffer

The pKa of acetic acid is 4.74.

[A⁻] could be taken as moles of sodium acetate (14.59g * (1mol / 82g) = 0.1779 moles

[HA] are the moles of acetic acid (0.060g * (1mol / 60g) = 0.001moles

Replacing:

pH = 4.74 + log [0.1779mol] / [0.001mol]

pH = 6.99 ≈ 7.0

The pH of the buffer is 7.0

But the buffer is not useful to pH = 7.0 because a buffer works between pKa±1 (For acetic acid: 3.74 - 5.74). As pH 7.0 is out of this interval,

this pH is not useful to pH 7.0

There are ________ hydrogen atoms in 25 molecules of c4h4s2.
coldgirl [10]

Answer: 100.

Explanation:

1) The subscripts to the right of each element (symbol) in the chemical formula tells the number of atoms of that element present in one unit formula.

2) The unit formula of C₄H₄S₂ is equal to 1 molecule.

3) Therefore, there are 4 carbon atoms, 4 hydrogen atoms and 2 sulfur atoms in each molecule of C₄H₄S₂.

4) Then, you just have to multiply the corresponding subscript of the element times the number of molecules (25 in this case) to find the number of atoms of that kind.

5) These are the calculations for each element in the molecule C₄H₄S₂.

i) C: 4 × 25 = 100

ii) H: 4 × 25 = 100

iii) S: 2 × 25 = 50.

6) The question is about H only, so the answer is that there are 100 hydrogen atoms in 25 molecules of C₄H₄S₂.

In the equilibrium system described by: PO43-(aq) + H2O(1) = HPO42-(aq) + OH-(aq) Brønsted-Lowry theory would designate: A) PO43
Kamila [148]

Answer:

The correct option is: B) H₂0 and OH⁻ as a conjugate pair

Explanation:

According to Brønsted-Lowry theory, the acids are the chemical substances that form a conjugate base by donating a proton and bases are the chemical substances that form conjugate acid by accepting a proton.

In the given chemical reaction: PO₄³⁻(aq) + H₂O(l) ⇄ HPO₄²⁻(aq) + OH⁻(aq)

According to Brønsted-Lowry theory, PO₄³⁻ and OH⁻ are bases. Whereas, H₂O and HPO₄²⁻ are acids.

Also, PO₄³⁻ and HPO₄²⁻ are the conjugate acid-base pair; and H₂O and OH⁻ are the conjugate acid-base pair.
