A company designed and sells an ultrasonic receiver, which detects sounds unable to be heard by the human ear. The receiver can

detect mechanical and electrical sounds such as leaking gases, air, corona, and motor friction noises. It can also be used to hear bats, insects, and even beading water. The receiver is 1818 in. deep. The focus is 6 in.6 in. from the vertex. Find the diameter of the outside edge of the receiver.

Answer:

the diameter of the outside edge of the receiver is 8\sqrt{18} \ \ \ inches

Explanation:

From the schematic free body diagram illustrating what the question is all about below;

Let represent A to be the vertex where the receiver is being placed

S to be the focus

BP to be equal to r (i.e radius of the outer edge)

BC to be 2 r   (i.e the diameter)

Given that AS = 4 in and AP is 18 in

Let AP be x- axis and AY be y -axis

A=(0,0)

S=(4,0) = (0,0)

So that the equation of the parabolic path of the receiver will be:

y^2 =4 ax  \\ \\ y^2 = 4*4*x \\ \\ y^2 = 16x

B = (AP, BP)

B = (18, r)

B lies  y² = 16 x

r² = 16 x

r² 16 × 18

r = \sqrt{16*18 } \\ \\ r = 4\sqrt{18}

Diameter BC = 2r

2* 4\sqrt{18} \\ \\= 8\sqrt{18 }  \ \ \ inches

The index of refraction for silicate flint glass is 1.66 for violet light that has a wavelength in air equal to 400 nm and 1.61
nikitadnepr [17]

Answer:

(a) Angle of incidence for violet is more than the angle of incidence for red

(b) 2.4°

Explanation:

refractive index for violet , v = 1.66

refractive index for red, nR = 1.61

wavelength for violet, λv = 400 nm

wavelength for red, λR = 700 nm

Angle of refraction, r = 30°

(a) Let iv be the angle of incidence for violet.

Use Snell,s law

nv = Sin iv / Sin r

1.66 = Sin iv / Sin 30

Sin iv = 0.83

iv = 56°

Use Snell's law for red

nR  = Sin iR / Sin r

where, iR be the angle of incidence for red

1.61 = Sin iR / Sin 30

Sin iR = 0.805

iR = 53.6°

So, the angle of incidence for violet is more than red.

(b) iv - iR = 56° - 53.6° = 2.4°

Electric field lines always begin at _______ charges (or at infinity) and end at _______ charges (or at infinity). One could als
lesantik [10]

Answer:

b)

Explanation:

By convention, the electric field lines (which are tangent to the direction of the electric field at a given point) always begin at positive charges, and finish at negative charges.

This is a consequence of the convention that states that the electric field has the direction of the trajectory of a positive test charge when released from rest in an electric field.

(As the positive charge would move away from positive charges and would  be attracted by negative ones).

So, the combination of answers that is true is b) (positive, negative, positive).

Describe the energy transformations that take place when a skier starts skiing down a hill but after a time is brought to rest b
Andrews [41]
<span>The skier will transform their gravitational energy into mostly kinetic energy (with a minor amount transformed into heat from the friction of the skis across the snow and air friction). Once the skier hits the snowdrift, their kinetic energy is transferred into the snow which moves when they strike it due to the kinetic energy that is now in the snow. Along with again a minor amount of heat energy transferred as they move through the snowdrift.</span>

A heat engine (Power Cycle) with a thermal efficiency of 35 percent efficiency produces 750 kJ of work. Heat transfer to the eng
frosja888 [35]

Answer:

a) The schematic illustrating is attached

b) The heat transfer to the heat engine is 2142.86 kJ, the heat transfer from the heat engine is 1392.86 kJ

c) The heat transfer to the heat engine is 1648.35 kJ, the heat transfer from the heat engine is 898.35 kJ

Explanation:

b) The heat transfer to the engine and the heat transfer from the engine to the air is:

Q_{1} =\frac{W}{n}

Where

W = 750 kJ

n = 35% = 0.25

Replacing:

Q_{1} =\frac{750}{0.35} =2142.86kJ

Q_{2} =Q_{1} -W=2142.86-750=1392.86kJ

c) The efficiency of Carnot engine is:

n=1-\frac{300K}{550K} =0.455

The heat transfer to the heat engine is:

Q_{1c} =\frac{750}{0.455} =1648.35kJ

The heat transfer from the heat engine is:

Q_{2c} =1648.35-750=898.35kJ

A 2200 kg truck has put its front bumper against the rear bumper of a 2400 kg SUV to give it a push. With the engine at full pow
leonid [27]

Answer:

a) The maximum possible acceleration the truck can give the SUV is 7.5 meters per second squared

b) The force of the SUV's bumper on the truck's bumper is 18000 newtons

Explanation:

a) By Newton's second law we can find the relation between force and acceleration of the SUV:

F=ma

With F the maximum force the truck applies to the SUV, m the mass of the SUV and a the acceleration of the SUV; solving for a:

a=\frac{F}{m}=\frac{18000}{2400}\approx7.5\,\frac{m}{s^{2}}

b) Because at this acceleration the truck's bumper makes a force of 18000 N on the SUV’s bumper by Third Newton’s law the force of the SUV’s bumper on the truck’s bumper is 18000 N too because they are action-reaction force pairs.
