A firework is designed so that when it is fired directly upwards, it explodes and splits into three equal-massed parts at its pe

ak. Someone launches the firework directly upwards and measures the locations of two of the pieces of the firework. They find that one piece landed 2 meters to the left and another piece landed two meters behind them. Where did the third piece land? Assume that none of the three parts went further upward after the explosion.

Answer:

the third piece landed 2\,\sqrt{2}  meters in a direction 45 degrees from the observer's right towards the front

Explanation:

Due to conservation of momentum, the momentum of the third piece must add to the other two momenta in vector from to render zero  (initial momentum of the firework on a plane parallel to ground. Therefore the momentum components of the third piece must have a component to the right equal in magnitude to the momentum of the piece that traveled to the left, and a momentum component pointing to the front of the observer of equal magnitude to that of the piece that traveled behind the observer. Then the direction of the third momentum must be at 45 degrees from the observer's right towards the observer's front.

Also, the magnitude of a momentum vector of such components, is given by the Pythagorean theorem. Recall also that the magnitudes of the momentum vectors of the first two pieces must be equal since they traveled equal distances.

|P_3|=\sqrt{P_1^2+P_2^2} \\|P_3|=\sqrt{P^2+P^2}\\|P_3|=\sqrt{2P^2}\\|P_3|=P\sqrt{2}

Then the distance traveled by the third piece must also keep this proportionality:

D_3=\sqrt{2} \,\,D\\D_3=\sqrt{2} \,*\,2\,\,meters\\D_3=2\,\sqrt{2} \,\,meters

Tori experiments with pulleys in physics class. She applies 70 newtons of force to a single pulley to lift a bowling ball. By ad
e-lub [12.9K]

The minimum input force she'll need to lift the ball is 35 N.

Explanation:

Mechanical advantage of a single pulley is 1. As, she applies 70 N of force to lift the bowling ball, so the output force(weight of the ball) is also 70 N.

Now, adding another pulley gives a mechanical advantage of 2. We have,

M.A = (Output Force)/(Input Force)

Substituting the values we get,

2=\frac{70}{F_{i}}

F_{i}=\frac{70}{2} = 35 N

Input force equals to 35 N needs to be applied.

A book rests on the shelf of a bookcase. The reaction force to the force of gravity acting on the book is 1. The force of the sh
Hoochie [10]

Answer:

1. The force of the shelf holding the book up.

Explanation:

The free body diagram of the book is as follows:

1 - The weight of the book towards downwards

2 - The normal force that the shelf exerts on the book towards upwards.

Since the book is at rest, these two forces are equal to each other and according to Newton's Third Law the reaction force to the force of gravity is equal but opposite to the weight of the book. This reaction force is the one that holds the book up on the shelf.

A uniform magnetic field of 0.50 T is directed along the positive x axis. A proton moving with a speed of 60 km s enters this fi
tatuchka [14]

Explanation:

It is given that,

Magnetic field, B = 0.5 T

Speed of the proton, v = 60 km/s = 60000 m/s

The helical path followed by the proton shown has a pitch of 5.0 mm, p = 0.005 m

We need to find the  angle between the magnetic field and the velocity of the proton. The pitch of the helix is the product of parallel component of velocity and time period. Mathematically, it is given by :

p=v_{||}\times T

p=v\ cos\theta\times \dfrac{2\pi m}{Bq}

cos\theta=\dfrac{pBq}{2\pi mv}

cos\theta=\dfrac{0.005\times 0.5\times 1.6\times 10^{-19}}{2\pi \times 1.67\times 10^{-27}\times 60000}

\theta=50.58^{\circ}

So, the angle between the magnetic field and the velocity of the proton is 50.58 degrees. Hence, this is the required solution.

The diagram shows two vectors that point west and north. What is the magnitude of the resultant vector? 13 miles 17 miles 60 mil
Kipish [7]
Using the formula A squared plus B squared equals C squared, we can find the solution by substituting 5 for A and 12 for B.

By squaring 5, we get 25, and by squaring 12, we get 144. Adding these, we get 169. The square root of this is 13.
