Answer: The sample is 144 years old.

Explanation: This is a type of radioactive decay and all radioactive decays follow first order kinetics.

We are given half life which is 72 years.

To calculate the rate constant, we use the formula:

k=\frac{0.693}{t_{1/2}}

k=\frac{0.693}{72years}

k=0.0096years^{-1}

Also 25 % of parent isotope is left, that means 75 % has been decomposed

Expression for rate law for first order kinetics is given by:

k=\frac{2.303}{t}\log\frac{a}{a-x}

where,

k = rate constant

t = time taken for decay process

a = initial amount of the reactant  = parent isotope= 100

a - x = amount left after decay process  = 25

Putting values in above equation, we get:

0.0096years^{-1}=\frac{2.303}{t}\log\frac{100}{25g}

t=144years

The radioactive decay obeys first order kinetics

the rate law expression for radioactive decay is

ln\frac{[A_{0}]}{[A_{t}]}=kt

Where

A0 = initial concentration

At = concentration after time "t"

t = time

k = rate constant

For first order reaction the relation between rate constant and half life is:

k=\frac{0.693}{t_{\frac{1}{2} } }

Let us calculate k

k = 0.693 / 72 = 0.009625 years⁻¹

Given

At = 0.25 A0

ln(\frac{A0}{0.25A0})=0.009625  X time

time = 144 years

So after 144 years the sample contains 25% parent isotope and 75% daughter isotopes**

Simply two half lives

Ksenya-84 [330]

Answer: 0.0164 molar concentration of hydrochloric acid in the resulting solution.

Explanation:

1) Molarity of 0.250 L HCl solution : 0.0328 M

Molarity=\frac{\text{Number of moles}}{\text{Volume of solution in liters}}=0.0328=\frac{\text{Number of moles}}{0.250 L}

Moles of HCl in 0.250 L solution = 0.0082 moles

2) Molarity of 0.100 L NaOH solution : 0.0245 M

Molarity=\frac{\text{Number of moles}}{\text{Volume of solution in liters}}=0.0245=\frac{\text{Number of moles}}{0.100 L}

Moles of NaOH in 0.100 L solution = 0.00245 moles

3) Concentration of hydrochloric acid in the resulting solution.

0.00245 moles of NaOH will neutralize 0.00245 moles of HCl out of 0.0082 moles of HCl.

Now the new volume of the solution = 0.100 L +0.250 L = 0.350 L

Moles of HCl left un-neutralized = 0.0082 moles - 0.00245 moles =  0.00575 moles

Molarity=\frac{\text{number of moles}}{\text{volume of solution in L}}

Molarity of HCl left un-neutralized :\frac{0.00575 moles}{0.350L}=0.0164 M

0.0164 molar concentration of hydrochloric acid in the resulting solution.

The mass percent of oxygen in pure glucose, c6h12o6 is 53.3 percent. a chemist analyzes a sample of glucose that contains impuri
Dafna1 [17]
We can calculate the mass percent of an element by dividing its atomic mass by the mass of the compound and then multiply by 100:
     % by mass of element = (mass of element/mass of compound) x100%
Impurities like n-eicosane with the molecular formula C20H42 could account for the low percent by mass of oxygen in the sample because it has a zero percent oxygen based on its compound formula which indicates that it does not have the element oxygen.

When 64.0 g of methanol (CHOH) is burned, 1454 kJ of energy is produced. What is the heat of combustion for methanol?
andreev551 [17]

 The heat  of combustion  for  methanol   is 727  kj/mol

    <em><u>calculation</u></em>

 calculate the moles  of methanol (CH3OH)

moles = mass/molar  mass

molar mass of methanol =  12 +( 1 x3)  +16 + 1= 32 g /mol

moles is therefore= 64.0 g / 32 g/mol =  2 moles

Heat of combustion  is therefore = 1454 Kj / 2 moles =  727  Kj/mol

A small portion of a crystal lattice is sketched below. What is the name of the unit cell of this lattice? Your answer must be a
Nikolay [14]

This is an incomplete question, the given sketch is shown below.

Answer : The name of given unit cell is, FCC (face-centered cubic unit cell)

Explanation :

Unit cell : It is defined as the smallest 3-dimensional portion of a complete space lattice which when repeated over the and again in different directions produces the complete space lattice.

There are three types of unit cell.

  • SCC (simple-centered cubic unit cell)
  • BCC (body-centered cubic unit cell)
  • FCC (face-centered cubic unit cell)

In SCC, the atoms are arranged at the corners.

Z=\frac{1}{8}\times 8=1

The number of atoms of unit cell = Z = 1

In BCC, the atoms are arranged at the corners and the body center.

Z=\frac{1}{8}\times 8+1=2

The number of atoms of unit cell = Z = 2

The given unit cell is, FCC because the atoms are arranged at the corners and the center of the 6 faces.

Z=\frac{1}{8}\times 8+\frac{1}{2}\times 6=4

The number of atoms of unit cell = Z = 4

Thus, the name of given unit cell is, FCC (face-centered cubic unit cell)
