Sulfur is composed of three isotopes: 32S, 33S, and 34S. The atomic masses of these isotopes are given below. 32S: 31.97207 amu

33S: 32.97146 amu 34S: 33.96786 amu The abundance of 34S is 4.22%. Given the average atomic mass of sulfur (32.07 amu), determine the abundance of 32S to two decimal places.

Answer:

Abundance of 32S is 94.41%

Explanation:

The average atomic mass is defined as the sum of the atomic masses of each isotope times its abundance:

Average atomic mass = ∑ Atomic mass istope*Abundance

For the sulfur:

32.07amu = 31.97207X + 32.97146Y + 33.96786*0.0422 <em>(1)</em>

<em>Where X is abundance of 32S and Y abundance of 33S</em>

Also we can write:

1 = X + Y + 0.0422 <em>(2)</em>

0.9578 - X = Y

Because the sum of the abundances = 1

Replacing (2) in (1):

32.07amu = 31.97207X + 32.97146(0.9578 - X) + 33.96786*0.0422

32.07 = 31.97207X + 31.58006 - 32.97146X + 1.43344

-0.9435 = -0.99939X

0.9441  =X

In percentage, abundance of 32S is 94.41%

viktelen [127]

Actual question from source:-

A 3.96x10-4 M solution of compound A exhibited an absorbance of 0.624 at 238 nm in a 1.000 cm cuvette.  A blank had an absorbance of 0.029.  The absorbance of an unknown solution of compound A was 0.375.  Find the concentration of A in the unknown.

Answer:

Molar absorptivity of compound A = 1502.53\ {Ms}^{-1}

Explanation:

According to the Lambert's Beer law:-

A=\epsilon l c

Where, A is the absorbance

 l is the path length

\epsilon is the molar absorptivity

c is the concentration.

Given that:-

c = 3.96\times 10^{-4}\ M

Path length = 1.000 cm

Absorbance observed = 0.624

Absorbance blank = 0.029

A = 0.624 - 0.029 = 0.595

So, applying the values in the Lambert Beer's law as shown below:-

0.595=\epsilon\times 1.000\ cm\times 3.96\times 10^{-4}\ M

\epsilon=\frac{0.595}{3.96\times 10^{-4}}\ {Ms}^{-1}=1502.53\ {Ms}^{-1}

<u>Molar absorptivity of compound A = 1502.53\ {Ms}^{-1}</u>

Janine is trying to separate some ethanol from water. Which method should she use does anyone know this
GuDViN [60]

To separate some ethanol from water, Jane needs to use the method of simple distillation.

Simple distillation is a separation method in which two liquids can be separated from each other based on differences in boiling point.

Since water has a higher boiling point than ethanol, ethanol is collected first as the distillation proceeds.

To show the electron configuration for an atom, when would it be better to use an orbital notation than to use a written configu
VikaD [51]
The answer is <span>D.when the aim is to show electron distributions in shells. This is because there are some instances when elements don't possess a regular or normal electron configuration. There are those who have special electron configurations wherein a lower subshell isn't completely filled before occupying a higher subshell. It is best to visualize such cases using the orbital notation.</span>

A metal oxide with the formula mo contains 15.44% oxygen. in the box below, type the symbol for the element represented by m.
lana66690 [7]

<u>Answer:</u> The element represented by M is Strontium.

<u>Explanation:</u>

Let us consider the molar mass of metal be 'x'.

The molar mass of MO will be = Molar mass of oxygen + Molar mass of metal = (16 + x)g/mol

It is given in the question that 15.44% of oxygen is present in metal oxide. So, the equation becomes:

\frac{15.44}{100}\times (x+16)=16g/mol\\\\(x+16)=\frac{16g/mol\times 100}{15.44}\\\\x=(103.626-16)g/mol\\\\x=87.62g/mol

The metal atom having molar mass as 87.62/mol is Strontium.

Hence, the element represented by M is Strontium.
