Answer:

The empirical formula of this substance is:

C_3H_6O_2

Explanation:

To find the empirical formula of this substance we need the molecular weight of the elements Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen, we can find this information in the periodic table:

- C: 12.01 g/mol

- H: 1.00 g/mol

- O: 15.99 g/mol

With the information in this exercise we can suppose in 100 g of the substance we have:

C: 48.64 g

H: 8.16 g

O: 43.2 g (100 g - 48.64g - 8.16g= 43.2 g)

Now, we need to divide these grams by the molecular weight:

C=\frac{48.64g}{12.01 g/mol} =4.05 mol\\H=\frac{8.16g}{1.00g/mol}= 8.16 mol\\O=\frac{43.2g}{15.99 g/mol} = 2.70 mol

We need to divide these results by the minor result, in this case O=2.70 mol

C=\frac{4.05mol}{2.70mol}= 1.5\\H= \frac{8.16mol}{2.70 mol} = 3.02 \\O=\frac{2.70mol}{2.70mol} = 1

We need to find integer numbers to find the empirical formula, for this reason we multiply by 2:

C= 1.5*2=3\\H= 3.02*2= 6.04 \\O= 1*2=2

This numbers are very close to integer numbers, so we can find the empirical formula as  subscripts in the chemical formula:

C_3H_6O_2

A 1.0 x 102- gram sample is found to be pure alanine, an amino acid found in proteins. How many moles of alanine are in the samp
Romashka-Z-Leto [24]

Answer:

1.123x10⁻⁴ moles of alanine

Explanation:

In order to convert grams of alanine into moles, <em>we need to know its molecular weight</em>:

The formula for alanine is C₃H₇NO₂, meaning <u>its molecular weight would be</u>:

  • 12*3 + 7*1 + 14 + 16*2 = 89 g/mol

Then we <u>divide the sample mass by the molecular weight</u>, to do the conversion:

  • 1.0x10⁻² g ÷ 89 g/mol = 1.123x10⁻⁴ moles

Nastasia [14]

Answer:

After measuring the solute, Carl should first dissolve the solid in a small amount of DI water before diluting to the total volume.

Explanation:

To ensure that all the solute dissolves in the solution, first dissolve the solid in less than the total volume of solution needed.

If an atom has sp3d2 hybridization in a molecule:
never [62]

Answer:

a. the maximum number of σ bonds that the atom can form is 4

b. the maximum number of p-p bonds that the atom can form is 2

Explanation:

Hybridization is the mixing of at least two nonequivalent orbitals, in this case, we have the mixing of one <em>s, 3 p </em> and <em> 2 d </em> orbitals. In hybridization the number of hybrid orbitals generated  is equal to the number of pure atomic orbital, so we have 6 hybrid orbital.

The shape of this hybrid orbital is octahedral (look the attached image) , it has 4 orbital located in the plane and 2 orbital perpendicular to it.

This shape allows the formation of maximum 4 σ bond, because σ bonds are formed by orbitals overlapping end to end.

And maximum 2 p-p bonds, because p-p bonds are formed by sideways overlapping orbitals. The atom can form one with each one of the orbitals located perpendicular to the plane.
