A compound contains only carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen. Combustion of 0.157g of the compound produced 0.213g of CO2 and

0.0310g of H2O. In another experiment, it is found that 0.103g of the compound produces 0.0230g of NH3. What is the empirical formula of the compound? (hint : combustion involves reacting with excess O2. Assume that all the carbon ends up in CO2 and all the hydrogen ends up in H2O. Also assume that all the nitrogen ends up in the NH3 in the second experiment.)

Answer:

C7H5N3O6

Explanation:

C = 12 g/mol

O = 16 g/mol

H = 1 g/mol

N = 14 g/mol

CO2 = 44 g/mol

H2O = 18 g/mol

NH3 = 17 g/mol

* 44 g CO2 is produced from 12 g C

0.213 g CO2 is produced from = (12)(0.213) / 44 = 0.0581 g C present in 0.157 g compound.

* 18 g H2O is produced from 2 g H

0.0310 g H2O is produced from = (2)(0.0310) / 18 = 0.0034 g H present in 0.157 g compound.

* 17 g NH3 is produced from 14 g N

0.0230 g NH3 is produced from = (14)(0.0230) / 17 = 0.0189 g N present in 0.103 g compound.(this is different)

If in 0.103 g compound there is 0.0189 g N

in 0.157 g compound there is ;

(0.157)(0.0189) / 0.103 = 0.0288 g N

* Mass of C, H and N = 0.0581 + 0.0034 + 0.0288 = 0.0903 g

The rest is mass of O = 0.157 - 0.0903 = 0.0667 g

Moles of elements in the compound sample:

C = 0.0581 g / 12 g/mol = 0.00484 mol

H = 0.0034 g / 1 g/mol = 0.0034 mol

N = 0.0288 g / 14 g/mol = 0.00205 mol

O = 0.0667 g / 16 g/mol = 0.00417 mol

Smallest mole ratio:

N = 0.00205 / 0.00205 = 1.00

C = 0.00484 / 0.00205 = 2.36

H = 0.0034 / 0.00205 = 1.66

O = 0.00417 / 0.00205 = 2.00

Multiplying by 3 we get;

N = 3

C = 7

H = 5

O = 6

Simplest formula:

C7H5O6N3

This is probanly TNT (trinitrotoluen)

If the speed of a vehicle increases by 22%, by what factor does its kinetic energy increase?
Mila [183]

Answer:

The kinetic increases by 48.84 %

Explanation:

The expression for the kinetic energy is:-

K.E.=\frac{1}{2}\times mv^2

Where, m is the mass of the object

v is the velocity of the object

Let the new velocity is:- v'

v is increased by 22 %. Thus, v' = 1.22 v

So, the new kinetic energy is:-

K.E.'=\frac{1}{2}\times mv'^2=\frac{1}{2}\times m{1.22}^2=\frac{1}{2}\times mv^21.4884=1.4884K.E.

Thus, the kinetic increases by 48.84 %

1. After clamping a buret to a ring stand, you notice that the set-up is tippy and unstable. What should you do to stabilize the
vampirchik [111]

Answer:

A. Move the buret clamp to a ring stand with a larger base.

Explanation:

The ring stands are used to hold burettes, light in weight to avoid loss of stability, that is why it is necessary to change the size of the ring stand so that it can support the buret that we are going to use. It is not recommended to balance it with the hand since it would give us an inaccurate result in the titration.

A mixture of CH4 and H2O is passed over a nickel catalyst at 1000 K. The emerging gas is collected in a 5.00L flask and is found
Harman [31]

Answer:

Kc = 3.74*10⁻³

Kp = 25.21

Explanation:

Step 1: Data given

Temperature = 1000 K

Volume = 5.00 L

Mass of CO = 8.62 grams

Mass of H2 = 2.60 grams

Mass of CH4 = 43.0 grams

Mass of H2O = 48.4 grams

Kc = [CO]*[H₂]³ / ([CH₄]∙*H₂O])

Kp = p(CO)*p(H₂)³ / (p(CH₄)*p(H₂O) )

Step 2: The balanced equation

CH₄ + H₂O ⇄ CO + 3 H₂

Step 3: Calculate number of moles

The number of moles of each compund in the equilibrium mixture are:

Moles = mass / molar mass

n(CH₄) = 43.0g / 16g/mol = 2.688mol

n(H₂O) = 48.4g / 18g/mol = 2.689mol

n(CO) = 8.62g/28g/mol = 0.308mol

n(H₂) = 2.60g / 2g/mol = 1.3mol

Step 4: Calculate concentrations at equilibrium

So the equilibrium concentrations are:

Concentration = moles / volume

[CH₄] = 2.688mol/5L = 0.5376 M

[H₂O] = 2.689mol/5L = 0.5378M

[CO] = 0.308mol/5L = 0.0616M

[H₂) = 1.3mol/5L = 0.26M

Step 5: Calculate Kc

Kc = 0.0616 ∙ (0.26)³ / (0.5376∙0.5378) = 3.74*10⁻³

Step 5: Calculate partial pressure

Partial pressures in equilibrium can be found from ideal gas law:

p(X) = n(X)∙R∙T/V = [X]∙R∙T

=> p(CH₄) = [CH₄]∙R∙T = 0.5376mol/L * 0.082 06Latm/molK ∙ 1000K = 44.11 atm

p(H₂O) = [H₂O]∙R∙T = 0.5738mol/L * 0.082 06Latm/molK * 1000K = 44.13 atm

p(CO) = [CO]∙R∙T = 0.0616mol/L * 0.082 06Latm/molK * 1000K = 5.05atm

p(H₂) = [CO]∙R∙T = 0.26mol/L * 0.082 06Latm/molK * 1000K = 21.34atm

Step 5: Calculate Kp

Kp = p(CO)*p(H₂)³ / (p(CH₄)*p(H₂O) )

Kp = 5.05*21.34³ / (44.11*44.13 ) = 25.21

Anna lives in a city that experiences high precipitation, with an average annual rainfall of 524 millimeters. It is warm all yea
gavmur [86]

Anna lives in a city that is part of the tropical climate types. It has a constantly warm weather, and thus higher humidity, and according to the annual rainfall, it is most probably a rainfall that appears seasonally, not throughout the whole year.

Tim, on the other hand, lives in a city that is part of the dry climate types. It is most probably a place that is deep into the mainland, like the cold deserts of Central Asia, where the temperatures in the summer are high, and in winter are very low. Because of the distance from the sea, the rainfall doesn't reach this places, so they are very dry, and only have symbolic amount of annual rainfall.
