A cell has a membrane potential of -‐100mV (more negative inside than outside) and has 1000 times more calcium ions outside the

cellthan inside. Which of the following describes the electrical and chemical gradients that influence the movement of calcium across the plasma membrane of this cell that is permeable to calcium?
A) The chemical gradient favors and the electrical gradient opposes the entry of calcium into the cell.
B) The electrical gradient favors and the chemical gradient opposes the entry of calcium into the cell.

Answer:

D) Both chemical and the electrical gradients favor calcium entry into the cell.

Explanation:

Naturally chemical gradient drives the movement of the chemical species, in this case Ca, from the regions of higher concentration to the regions of lower concentration. Then, Ca moves to inside the cell.

Whereas the movement due to electrical potential gradients is  from higher to lower potentials for positive charges (negative charge move in opossite direction from lower to higher potentials). Calcium is a cation, it is positively charged (Ca^{2+}), so calcium would move to lower potentials, that is to more negative potentials. Then Ca moves to inside the cell.

Stu wanted to calculate the resistance of a light bulb connected to a 4.0-V battery, with a resulting current of 0.5 A. He used
Margarita [4]

Answer:

The answer is not correct.

Explanation:

Stu's answer is not correct, the equation to use is known as the law of ohm. In which the voltage is defined as the product of the current by the resistance, then we will see this equation.

V = I*R\\where:\\I = current [amp]\\R = resistance [ohm]\\V = voltage [volts]\\

In order to find resistance, this term is found multiplying the current on the right side of the equation, therefore the current will be divided on the left side of the equation.

R=\frac{V}{I} \\replacing:\\R=\frac{4}{0.5} \\R=8[ohms]

That is the reason that the result found by Stu is not correct.

A 50-kg person stands 1.5 m away from one end of a uniform 6.0-m-long scaffold of mass 70.0 kg.
babymother [125]

Answer

given,

mass of the person, m = 50 Kg

length of scaffold = 6 m

mass of scaffold, M= 70 Kg

distance of person standing from one end = 1.5 m

Tension in the vertical rope = ?

now equating all the vertical forces acting in the system.

T₁ + T₂ = m g + M g

T₁ + T₂ = 50 x 9.8  + 70 x 9.8

T₁ + T₂ = 1176...........(1)

system is equilibrium so, the moment along the system will also be zero.

taking moment about rope with tension T₂.

now,

T₁ x 6 - mg x (6-1.5) - M g x 3 = 0

'3 m' is used because the weight of the scaffold pass through center of gravity.

6 T₁ = 50 x 9.8 x 4.5 + 70 x 9.8 x 3

6 T₁ = 4263

    T₁ = 710.5 N

from equation (1)

T₂ = 1176 - 710.5

 T₂ = 465.5 N

hence, T₁ = 710.5 N and T₂ = 465.5 N

Using the mass and radius of the Sun given under the "Vital Statistics" section of Chapter 10 in your textbook, calculate the Su
atroni [7]

Answer:

The density of the sun is 4434kg/m³

This was found by dividing the mass (1.989 ×10³⁰kg) by the volume (4.486×10²⁶ m³) which was calculated using V = 4/3×pi ×r³

A wind turbine works by slowing the air that passes its blades and converting much of the extracted kinetic energy to electric e
ddd [48]

Answer:

2649600 Joules

Explanation:

Efficiency = 40%

m = Mass of air = 92000 kg

v = Velocity of wind = 12 m/s

Kinetic energy is given by

K=\frac{1}{2}mv^2\\\Rightarrow K=\frac{1}{2}\times 92000\times 12^2\\\Rightarrow K=6624000\ J

The kinetic energy of the wind is 6624000 Joules

The wind turbine extracts 40% of the kinetic energy of the wind

E=0.4\times K\\\Rightarrow E=0.4\times 6624000\\\Rightarrow E=2649600\ J

The energy extracted by the turbine every second is 2649600 Joules

A horizontal rectangular surface has dimensions 2.80 cm by 3.20 cm and is in a uniform magnetic field that is directed at an ang
koban [17]

Answer:

magnitude of the magnetic field 0.692 T

Explanation:

given data

rectangular dimensions = 2.80 cm by 3.20 cm

angle of 30.0°

produce a flux Ф = 3.10 × 10^{-4}  Wb

solution

we take here rectangular side a and b as a = 2.80 cm and b = 3.20 cm

and here angle between magnitude field and area will be ∅ = 90 - 30

∅ = 60°

and flux  is express as

flux Ф = \int \vec{B}.d\vec{A}   .................1

and Ф = BA cos∅    ............2

so B = \frac{\phi }{Acos\theta }

and we know

A = ab

so

B = \frac{\phi }{abcos\theta }    ..............3

put here value

B =  \frac{3.10\times 10^{-4} }{2.80 \times 10^{-2}\times 3.20 \times 10^{-2}\times cos60}

solve we get

B = 0.692 T
