Sodium metal (atomic weight 22.99 g/cm^3) adopts a body-centered cubic structure with a density of 0.97 g/cm^3. (a) Use this inf

ormation and Avogrado's number (Na=6.022x10^23) to estimate the atomic radius of sodium. (b) If it didn't react so vigorously, sodium could float on water. Use the answer from part (a) to estimate the density of Na if its structure were that of a cubic close-packed metal. Would it still float on the water?

Answer:

The atomic radius of sodium is 185.59 pm.

Sodium metal will float in water.

Explanation:

a) To calculate the density of metal, we use the equation:

\rho=\frac{Z\times M}{N_{A}\times a^{3}}

where,

\rho = density  = 0.97 g/cm^3

Z = number of atom in unit cell = 2  (BCC)

M = atomic mass of metal = 22.99 g/mol

N_{A} = Avogadro's number = 6.022\times 10^{23}

a = edge length of unit cell = ?

Putting values in above equation, we get:

0.97 g/cm^3=\frac{2\times 22.99}{6.022\times 10^{23}\times (a)^3}

a=4.286\times 10^{-8} cm=4.286\times 10^{-8}\times 10^{10} pm = 428.6 pm

1 cm = 10^{10} pm

To calculate the radius, we use the relation between the radius and edge length for BCC lattice:

R=\frac{\sqrt{3}a}{4}

where,

R = radius of the lattice = ?

a = edge length = 428.6 pm

Putting values in above equation, we get:

R=\frac{\sqrt{3}\times 428.6}{4}=185.59 pm

The atomic radius of sodium is 185.59 pm.

b)

Density of water = D = 1 g/mL = 1 g/cm^3

( 1 mL = 1cm^3)

Density of the sodium metal = d =0.97 g/cm^3

D > d ( float)

Since, the density of the sodium metal is less than the water's density which means that sodium metal will float in water.

A converging lens with a focal length of 70.0cm forms an image of a 3.20-cm-tall real object that is to the left of the lens. Th
Setler [38]

Answer: (i)The object is at a distance of 120cm from the lens while the image is at a distance of 160cm from the lens. (ii)The image is Real

Note: This is the complete question; A converging lens with a focal length of 70.0cm forms an image of a 3.20-cm-tall real object that is to the left of the lens. The image is 4.50cm tall and inverted. Where are the object and image located in relation to the lens? Is the image real or virtual?

Explanation:

The required formulas are;

1. lens formula given by,  <em>1/s' + 1/s = 1/f</em>

2. magnification = <em>h'/h = s'/s</em>

where h' is image height, h is object height, s' is image distance, s is object distance, f is focal length of lens.

h' = 4.50cm, h = 3.20cm, f = 70cm ( f of a converging lens is positive)

solving for s' and s in eqn (2)

4.50/3.20=s'/s

1.4=s'/s

s'=1.4s

to find the values of s' and s, we use equation (1) and substitute s' = 1.4s

1/1.4s + 1/s = 1/70

2.4/1.4s =1/70

s = 2.4*70/1.4 = 120cm

s' = 1.4*120 = 160cm

Therefore, the object is on the left, 120cm from the lens while the image is 160cm on the right of the lens

<em>Since the object is at a distance between f and 2f from the lens, the image formed is</em> real, inverted and magnified

Is utensils a substance homogeneous mixture or heterogeneous mixture
Phoenix [80]

A pure substance or a homogeneous mixture consists of a single phase. A heterogeneous mixture consists of two or more phases. When oil and water are combined, they do not mix evenly, but instead form two separate layers.

Q 11.20: What is the product of the reaction between t-BuCl and MeOH? A : t-BuOH B : MeOCl C : t-BuOMe D : (CH3)2CCH2
Sholpan [36]

Answer:

C : t-BuOMe

Explanation:

The tert -butanol is a tertiary alcohol and when chloride ion attacks the carbocation, it forms t-BuCl.

The reaction of tert-butyl chloride or t-BuCl ((CH3)3C−Cl) with methanol and MeOH (CH3−OH) gives the product tert-Butyl methyl ether or t-BuOMe (CH3)3C−OCH3:

                   (CH3)3C−Cl + CH3−OH => (CH3)3C−OCH3 + HCl

Hence, the correct asnwer is C : t-BuOMe
