We take as a basis for solving this item, 100 g of sample. If 15.77% of the sample is carbon, we solve for the amount of carbon in the sample,

    Carbon = (100 g)(0.1577)  = 15.77

Then, we solve for the amount sulphur in the sample by,

    Sulfur = (100 g)(1 – 0.1577) = 84.23 g

Next, we solve for the number of moles of the elements by dividing the calculated masses by the molar mass.

Carbon = (15.77g)(1 mol/12 g) = 1.3 moles

Sulphur = (84.23 g)(1 mol/32 g) = 2.63 moles

From the ratio of the calculated number of moles, we can say that each mol of carbon will have to be paired up with two other sulphur atoms. Thus, the shape of the molecule is LINEAR.

Write the net ionic equation for the reaction of zinc metal with aqueous iron(II) nitrate. Include physical states.
kotykmax [81]

Answer:

Zn°(s) + Fe⁺²(aq)  => Zn⁺²(aq) + Fe°(s)

Explanation:

Molecular Equation:

Zn°(s) + Fe(NO₃)₂(aq) => Zn(NO₃)₂(aq) + Fe°(s)

Ionic Equation:

Zn°(s) + Fe⁺²(aq) + 2NO₃⁻(aq) => Zn⁺²(aq) + 2NO₃⁻(aq) + Fe°(s)

Net Ionic Equation: => Drop NO₃⁻ as spectator ion

Zn°(s) + Fe⁺²(aq)  => Zn⁺²(aq) + Fe°(s)

The partial pressures of CH 4, N 2, and O 2 in a sample of gas were found to be 183 mmHg, 443 mmHg, and 693 mmHg, respectively.
Natasha2012 [34]

Answer:

Mole fraction N₂ = 0.336

Explanation:

Mole fraction of a gas can be determined in order to know the partial pressure of the gas, and the total pressure, in the mixture.

Total pressure in the mixture: Sum of partial pressure from all the gases

Total pressure = 183 mmHg + 443 mmHg + 693 mmHg =1319 mmHg

Mole fraction N₂ = Partial pressure N₂ / Total pressure

443 mmHg / 1319 mmHg = 0.336

Remember that mole fraction does not carry units
