Depression is freezing point is a colligative property. It is mathematically expressed as ΔTf = Kf X m

where Kf = <span>freezing point depression constant = 1.86°c kg /mol (for water)
m = molality of solution = 1.40 m

</span>∴ ΔTf = Kf X m  = 1.86 X 1.40 = 2.604 oC

Now, for water freezing point = 0 oC

∴Freezing point of solution = -2.604 oC

Consider NH3 and PH3. Electronegativities: P = 2.1, H = 2.1, N=3.0. Which statement is false?
NikAS [45]

Answer:

The P-H bonds are more polar than the N-H bonds.

Explanation:

Phosphine is a polar molecule with non-polar bonds. The phosphorus atom is bonded to three hydrogen atoms and the phosphorus atom has a lone pair of electrons. Since hydrogen and phosphorus are equal in electronegativity, it implies that they attract the shared pairs of electrons the same amount,hence bonding electrons are shared equally making the covalent bonds non-polar.

The lone pair of electrons on phosphorus causes the molecule to be asymmetrical with respect to charge distribution this is why the molecule is polar even though the are non-polar bonds in the molecule.

Looking at the values of electro negativity stated in the question, one can easily see that the difference in electro negativity between nitrogen and hydrogen is 0.9 while the difference in electro negativity between phosphorus and hydrogen is zero. It is clear that NH3 is naturally more polar than PH3 since each individual N-H bond in NH3 is a polar bond while the individual P-H bonds in PH3 are nonpolar.

Determine the specific heat (in J/g C) for a 2.508 kilogram substance which increases its temperature from 4.051 C to 42.061 C w
just olya [345]

Answer: 0.036 J/g°C

Explanation:

The quantity of heat energy (Q) required to raise the temperature of a substance depends on its Mass (M), specific heat capacity (C) and change in temperature (Φ)

Thus, Q = MCΦ

Given that,

Q = 3.42 Kilojoules

[Convert 3.42 kilojoules to joules

If 1 kilojoule = 1000 joules

3.42 kilojoules = 3.42 x 1000 = 3420J]

Mass = 2.508Kg

[Convert 2.508 kg to grams

If 1 kg = 1000 grams

2.508kg = 2.508 x 1000 = 2508g]

C = ? (let unknown value be Z)

Φ = (Final temperature - Initial temperature)

= 42.061°C - 4.051°C

= 38.01°C

Apply the formula, Q = MCΦ

3420J = 2508g x Z x 38.01°C

3420J = 95329.08g•°C x Z

Z = (3420J / 95329.08g•°C)

Z = 0.03588 J/g°C

Round the value of Z to the nearest thousandth, hence Z = 0.036 J/g°C

Thus, the specific heat of the substance is 0.036 J/g°C

Which pair of statements below is correct? Multiple Choice An octet is formed via ionic bonding when one or more valence electro
tresset_1 [31]

Answer:

An octet is formed via ionic bonding when one or more valence electrons are transferred from one atom to another.

An octet is formed via covalent bonding when valence electrons are shared between atoms.

An octet is always formed via ionic bonding

Explanation:  The essence of bonding is stability. An octet or duplet state is formed when one or more valence electrons are shared. when the electrons are shared, the type of bond formed is a covalent bond. An octet is formed via ionic bonding when one or more valence electrons are transferred from one atom to another.

What is the change in enthalpy in kilojoules when 3.24 g of CH3OH is completely reacted according to the following reaction 2 CH
vodka [1.7K]

Answer:

12.78 kJ

Explanation:

The correct balanced reaction would be

2CH_3OH\rightarrow 2CH_4+O_2\Delta H=252.8\ \text{kJ}

Mass of methanol = 3.24\ \text{g}

Moles of methanol can be obtained by dividing the mass of methanol with its molar mass (32.04\ \text{g/mol})

\dfrac{3.24}{32.04}=0.10112\ \text{moles}

Enthalpy change for the number of moles is given by

\dfrac{\text{Number of moles of methanol in the reaction}}{\text{Enthalpy change in the reaction}}=\dfrac{\text{Number of moles in 3.24 g of methanol}}{\text{Enthaply in change in the mass of methanol}}

\\\Rightarrow\dfrac{2}{252.8}=\dfrac{0.10112}{\Delta H}\\\Rightarrow \Delta H=\dfrac{0.10112\times 252.8}{2}\\\Rightarrow \Delta H=12.781568\approx 12.78\ \text{kJ}

The change in enthalpy is 12.78 kJ.
