5. Answer;

-Nucleus

-The results of Rutherford’s gold foil experiment demonstrated that the nucleus occupies a very small amount of the total space inside an atom

Explanation;

-In Rutherford's gold foil experiment, alpha particles that bounce straight back from the foil have struck nucleus in the gold atoms. Some of the alpha particles aimed at gold atoms bounced back, suggesting that a solid mass was at the center of the atom.

From this experiment, he concluded that; Most of the space inside the atom is empty because most of the α-particles passed through the gold foil without getting deflected. Additionally, very few particles were deflected from their path, indicating that the positive charge of the atom occupies very little space.

6. Answer;

-Atomic number

If element Q has 11 protons, its atomic number is 11.

Explanation;

-The atomic number or proton number of a chemical element is the number of protons found in the nucleus of an atom. It is identical to the charge number of the nucleus and also uniquely identifies a chemical element.

-In a neutral or uncharged atom, the atomic number is also equal to the number of electrons.

7. Answer;

-Energy shell or energy levels

The region in which an electron is most likely to be found is called a(an) energy shell or energy level.

Explanation;

An atom is the smallest particle of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction.

An atom contains of a small nucleus and the energy shells or energy levels. The nucleus of an atom contains protons and the nucleus while the energy levels contains electrons. Protons are positively charged which makes the nucleus to have a positive charge, while the electrons are negatively charged.

-In a neutral or uncharged atom the number of protons in the nucleus is equal to the number of electrons in the energy levels.

8. Answer;

Excited state

An atom in which an electron has moved to a higher energy level is in a(an) excited state

Explanation;

-Excited state of an atom is the sate at which electrons move to a higher energy than the ground state.

-When a valence electron absorbs energy, it enters what is known as an excited state. The excited state can commonly take the form of the electron jumping from its original energy level or orbital, also known as the ground state, to an empty orbital of a higher energy shell that is further away from the nucleus.

5.

The results of Rutherford’s gold foil experiment demonstrated that the <u>nucleus </u>occupies a very small amount of the total space inside an atom.

Further Explanation:

• In Rutherford's gold foil experiment, the beam of alpha particles hit the thin gold foil. Some of them follow the same path after hitting the gold foil while some of them deflect from the path and bounces back indicating the presence of solid mass at the center of atom.

• From this experiment, he concluded that most of the part in atom is empty because most α-particles go through the gold foil without being deflect. In addition, very few particles deflected from the path, indicating that very less space occupied by positive charge.

6.

If element Q has 11 protons, its atomic <u>number</u> is 11.

Further Explanation:

• Atomic number of an element is number of protons present in nucleus of an atom. Atomic and charge number is same of the nucleus and identifies an element uniquely.

• In an atom, electron and proton are equal in number.

7.

The region in which an electron is most likely to found called an <u>energy shell or energy level.</u>

Further Explanation:

• An atom consists of a small nucleus and energy shells or energy levels.

• Nucleus consist protons and nucleons while the energy level consist electrons.

• Charge on proton is positive while charge on electron is negative.

• In an atom, proton and electron are equal in number.

8.

An atom in which an electron has moved to a higher energy level is in <u>excited</u> state.

Further Explanation:

• Excited state of the atom is a state, which occurs due to moving of electrons from a lower energy shell to higher energy shell.

• When a valence electron absorbs energy from photons, it gets excited to a higher energy shell from a lower energy shell and occurs only when electron is already excited to its lower energy shell from a ground state.

A 2200 kg truck has put its front bumper against the rear bumper of a 2400 kg SUV to give it a push. With the engine at full pow
leonid [27]

Answer:

a) The maximum possible acceleration the truck can give the SUV is 7.5 meters per second squared

b) The force of the SUV's bumper on the truck's bumper is 18000 newtons

Explanation:

a) By Newton's second law we can find the relation between force and acceleration of the SUV:

F=ma

With F the maximum force the truck applies to the SUV, m the mass of the SUV and a the acceleration of the SUV; solving for a:

a=\frac{F}{m}=\frac{18000}{2400}\approx7.5\,\frac{m}{s^{2}}

b) Because at this acceleration the truck's bumper makes a force of 18000 N on the SUV’s bumper by Third Newton’s law the force of the SUV’s bumper on the truck’s bumper is 18000 N too because they are action-reaction force pairs.

A person drops a stone down a well and hears the echo 8.9 s later. if it takes 0.9 s for the echo to travel up the well, approxi
Temka [501]

Total time in between the dropping of the stone and hearing of the echo = 8.9 s

Time taken by the sound to reach the person = 0.9 s

Time taken by the stone to reach the bottom of the well = 8.9 - 0.9 = 8 seconds

Initial speed (u) = 0 m/s

Acceleration due to gravity (g) = 9.8 m/s^2

Time taken (t) = 8 seconds

Let the depth of the well be h.

Using the second equation of motion:

h = ut + \frac{1}{2}\times a \times t^2

h = 0 \times 8 + \frac{1}{2} \times 9.8 \times 8^2

h = 313.6 m

Hence, the depth of the well is 313.6 m

What frequency is received by a person watching an oncoming ambulance moving at 110 km/h and emitting a steady 800-Hz sound from
Strike441 [17]

To develop this problem we will apply the concepts related to the Doppler effect. The frequency of sound perceive by observer changes from source emitting the sound. The frequency received by observer f_{obs} is more than the frequency emitted by the source. The expression to find the frequency received by the person is,

f_{obs} = f_s (\frac{v_w}{v_w-v_s})

f_s= Frequency of the source

v_w= Speed of sound

v_s= Speed of source

The velocity of the ambulance is

v_s = 119km/h (\frac{1000m}{1km})(\frac{1h}{3600s})

v_s = 30.55m/s

Replacing at the expression to frequency of observer we have,

f_{obs} = 800Hz(\frac{345m/s}{345m/s-30.55m/s})

f_{obs} = 878Hz

Therefore the frequency receive by observer is 878Hz

What factors affect the ability of a substance to transfer thermal energy to heat or be heated by it's surroundings?
xeze [42]

The prime factors that affect the ability of substances to transfer the thermal energy to heat are the temperature difference between the two objects, area of cross-section, time, and distance travelled by the thermal energy.

<u>Explanation: </u>

The process of heat conduction takes place through contact between two or more objects. But this conduction depends on multiple factors that are responsible for thermal conduction. They are-

  • Temperature Difference(\Delta T) - The two objects must have a temperature difference else there will be no thermal conduction between them. The more the difference in their temperatures, the more thermal energy flows from one object to the other.
  • Area of Cross-section (A) - Larger areas of contact provide as better medium of thermal conduction.
  • Time (t) - The more time we give for the thermal conduction, the more energy is transmitted from one system to the other.
  • Distance Travelled (l) - The longer the distance, lesser the conduction. Means, the distance should be minimized in order to achieve the optimum thermal conduction between two objects.

Consider metal pot and its handle, it is being boiled for 15 m. The molecules present near the source of heat, showing fast vibration and bounce off. It actually indicates the heats of substance. That’s why, handle remains hot as heat conduction takes place.  It can be estimated by,

                                       Q=\frac{k A \Delta T t}{l}

k - Thermal conductivity of the material, measured in J/s.m.^{\circ} \mathrm{C}
