rmine the specific heat capacity of an unknown mineral. The 307-g sample was heated to 98.7°C and placed into a calorimeter containing 72.4 g of water at 23.6°C. The heat capacity of the calorimeter was 15.7 J/K. The final temperature in the calorimeter was 32.4°C. What is the specific heat capacity of the mineral?

Answer : The specific heat capacity of the mineral is 0.131J/g^oC

Explanation :

In this problem we assumed that heat given by the hot body is equal to the heat taken by the cold body.

q_1=-q_2

m_1\times c_1\times (T_f-T_1)=-m_2\times c_2\times (T_f-T_2)

where,

c_1 = specific heat of unknown mineral = ?

c_2 = specific heat of water = 4.18J/g^oC

m_1 = mass of unknown mineral = 307 g

m_2 = mass of water = 72.4 g

T_f = final temperature of calorimeter = 32.4^oC

T_1 = initial temperature of unknown mineral = 98.7^oC

T_2 = initial temperature of water = 23.6^oC

Now put all the given values in the above formula, we get

307g\times c_1\times (32.4-98.7)^oC=-72.4g\times 4.18J/g^oC\times (32.4-23.6)^oC

c_1=0.131J/g^oC

Therefore, the specific heat capacity of the mineral is 0.131J/g^oC

A flask contains 0.180 mol of liquid bromine, br2. determine the number of bromine molecules present in the flask.
Reika [66]
Avogadro's number represents the number of units in one mole of any substance. This has the value of 6.022 x 10^23 units / mole. This number can be used to convert the number of atoms or molecules into number of moles. We calculate as follows:

0.180 mol Br2 ( 6.022 x 10^23 molecules / mole ) = 1.084x10^23 molecules Br2

The incomplete table below shows selected characteristics of gas laws.
Elenna [48]

Explanation :

In the given case different law related to gas is given. The attached figure shows the required solution.

Boyle's law states that the pressure is inversely proportional to the volume of the gas i.e.

P\propto \dfrac{1}{V}

PV=k

k is a constant.

Charle's law states that the volume of directly proportional to the temperature of the gas.

V\propto T

V=kT

Combined gas law is the combination of the pressure, volume and the temperature of the gas i.e.

\dfrac{PV}{T}=k

Hence, this is the required solution.

What effect do tube dwelling worms have on mudflat ecosystems?
pentagon [3]
Earthworms influence (and benefit) the soil ecosystem in a number of ways: Recycling organic material: Earthworms, along with bacteria and fungi, decompose organic material. ... Improving soil structure: Earthworm burrows alter the physical structure of the soil. They open up small spaces, known as pores, within the soil.

a block of iron has a mass of 826g. what is the mass of a block of magnesium that has the same volume as the block of iron? the
fiasKO [112]

Answer is: the mass of a block of magnesium is 177.75 grams.

m(Fe) = 826 g.

d(Fe) = 7.9 g/cm³.

1) Calculate volume of iron and magnesium:

d(Fe) = m(Fe) ÷ V(Fe).

V(Fe) = m(Fe) ÷ d(Fe).

V(Fe) = 826 g ÷ 7.9 g/cm³.

V(Fe) = V(Mg) = 104.56 cm³.

2) Calculate mass of magnesium:

m(Mg) = V(Mg) · d(Mg).

m(Mg) = 104.56 g/cm³ · 1.7 g/cm³.

m(Mg) = 177.75 g.
