A 48.0-kg astronaut is in space, far from any objects that would exert a significant gravitational force on him. He would like t

o move toward his spaceship, but his jet pack is not functioning. He throws a 0.720-kg socket wrench with a velocity of 5.00 m/s in a direction away from the ship. After 0.500 s, he throws a 0.800-kg spanner in the same direction with a speed of 8.00 m/s. After another 9.90 s, he throws a mallet with a speed of 6.00 m/s in the same direction. The mallet has a mass of 1.20 kg. How fast is the astronaut moving after he throws the mallet?(assume all speeds are relative to the spaceship). m/s

Answer:

The astronaut is moving at a speed of 0.36m/s

Explanation:

Speed here corresponds to velocity

The astronaut's mass = 48kg

velocity of astronaut = ?

mass of socket = 0.72kg

velocity of socket = 5m/s

mass of the spanner = 0.8kg

velocity of spanner = 8m/s

change in time = 0.05 -0 = 0.05sec

mass of the mallet = 1.2kg

velocity of mallet = 6m/s

change in time = 9.9 -0 = 9.9sec

To find the astronaut velocity, we would calculate the total momentum which is the astronaut.

∑momentum (M) = ∑astronaut momentum

∑M = ∑astronaut M

∑astronaut M = M of socket + M of spanner + M of mallet

momentum = mass × velocity

(mass × velocity)of astronaut = (0.72×5) + (0.8×8) + (1.2×6)

48 × velocity of astronaut= 3.6 + 6.4 + 7.2

48 × velocity of astronaut= 17.2

velocity of astronaut = 17.2/48

velocity of astronaut = 0.36m/s

The astronaut is moving at a speed of 0.36m/s

Someone fires a 0.04 kg bullet at a block of wood that has a mass of 0.5 kg. (The block of wood is sitting on a frictionless sur
d1i1m1o1n [39]

Answer:

The speed of bullet and wooden bock coupled together, V = 22.22 m/s

Explanation:

Given that,

Mass of the bullet, m = 0.04 Kg

Mass of the wooden block, M = 0.5 Kg

The initial velocity of the bullet, u = 300 m/s

The initial velocity of the wooden block, U = 0 m/s

The final velocity of the bullet and wooden bock coupled together, V = 0 m/s

According to the conservation of linear momentum, the total momentum of the body after impact is equal to the total momentum before impact.

Therefore,

                              mV + MV = mu + MU

                               V(m+M) = mu

                                 V = mu/(m+M)

Substituting the values in the above equation,

                                V = 0.04 Kg x 300 m/s  / (0.04 Kg+ 0.5 Kg)

                                    = 22.22 m/s

Hence, the speed of bullet and wooden bock coupled together, V = 22.22 m/s

Solve the equation x=3logy2 for y.
melisa1 [442]

X = 3 · log(Y²)

X = 3 · 2·log(Y)

X/6 = log(Y)

10^(X/6) = 10^log(Y)

Y = 10^(X/6)

A 0.28-kg stone you throw rises 34.3 m in the air. The magnitude of the impulse the stone received from your hand while being th
goldfiish [28.3K]

Answer:

7.3 kg m/s

Explanation:

First of all, let's calculate the gravitational potential energy of the stone as it reaches its highest point:

U=mgh=(0.28 kg)(9.8 m/s^2)(34.3 m)=94.1 J

For the law of conservation of energy, this is equal to the initial kinetic energy of the stone at ground level (where the potential energy is zero), just after the stone leaves your hand:

K=\frac{1}{2}mv^2=94.1 J

From this equation we can find the velocity of the stone as it leaves your hand:

v=\sqrt{\frac{2K}{m}}=\sqrt{\frac{2(94.1 J)}{0.28 kg}}=25.9 m/s

The initial velocity of the stone (before leaving your hand) is zero:

u=0

The impulse received by the stone is equal to its change in momentum, so:

I=\Delta p=m\Delta v=m(v-u)=(0.28 kg)(25.9 m/s-0)=7.3 kg m/s

Jenny and Alyssa are members of the cross-country team. On a training run, Jenny starts off and runs at a constant 3.8 m/s. Alys
guapka [62]

Answer:

285 seconds

Explanation:

Jenny speed is 3.8 m/s

Alyssa speed in 4.0 m/s

Alyssa starts after 15 seconds

Find the distance covered by Jenny, when Alyssa starts

Distance=Speed*time

Distance covered by Jenny in 15 seconds= 3.8×15=57m

Relative speed of the two members heading same direction will be;

4.0m/s-3.8m/s=0.2m/s

To find the time Alyssa catch up with Jenny you divide the distance to be covered by Alyssa by the relative speed of the two

Distance=57m, relative speed=0.2m/s  t=57/0.2 =285 seconds

=4.75 minutes

In an experiment to illustrate the propagation of sound through fluids, identical sound sources emitting at 440 Hz are used to p
earnstyle [38]

Answer:

B. In mercury, the frequency of the wave is the same as in ethanol, but the wavelength is greater.

Explanation:

To solve this easily, we can just calculate the wavelength of the sound in Ethanol and in Mercury.

In Ethanol, the wavelength will be:

λ = c/f

λ = 1160/440

λ = 2.63 m

In Mercury, the wavelength will be:

λ = c/f

λ = 1450/440

λ = 3.3 m

The wavelength of sound is greater in Mercury than in Ethanol but the frequency is the same.

Frequency of sound is not dependent on medium, but velocity and wavelength change depending on the medium.
