You have two beakers. One contains a solution of HCl at pH = 1.0. The other contains a solution of NaOH at pH = 13. Into a third

beaker, you slowly and cautiously pour 20 mL of the HCl and 20 mL of the NaOH. After complete stirring, the pH of the mixture will be
A) 2.0.
B) 12.0.
C) 7.0.
D) 5.0.

Answer:

The final pH will be 7.0 (C)

Explanation:

The pH is a scale to measure the concentration of protons in a solution. The followiing equation shows the mathematical definition of pH:

pH = - log [H+]

Another important equation is the one correlating the values of pH and pOH, which regards the concentration of hidroxide ions in solution;

pKw = pH + pOH , with pKw = 14

Finally, it is necessary to know that when an acidic and an basic solutions are mixed quantitatively, menaing with no excess of hydrogen or hydroxide ions, a neutralization reaction occurs:

HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O

Now, lets calculate the H⁺ and OH⁻ concentrations in both solutions:

HCl: pH = 1.0, which means pH = -log[H⁺] ∴ [H⁺]  = 1 x  10⁻¹ mol/L

NaOH: pH = 13.0, which means pOH = 1.0  pOH = -log[OH⁻] ∴ [OH⁻]  = 1 x  10⁻¹ mol/L

Since the concentrations of H⁺ and OH⁻ are the same and equal volumes of each solutions were used, a neutralization reaction will happen and the final pH will be equal to the pH of water (pKw) which is 7.0.

Suppose there is a gaseous mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. If the total pressure of the mixture is 470 mmHg , and the partial pr
ch4aika [34]

Answer:

190 mmHg

Explanation:

According to Dalton's law, in a mixture of ideal gases, each gas behaves independently of the other. Also, the total pressure is equal to the sum of the individual partial pressures.

The total pressure of the mixture is 470 mmHg , and the partial pressure of nitrogen is 280 mmHg. Then,

P = pO₂ + pN₂

pO₂ = P - pN₂

pO₂ = 470 mmHg - 280 mmHg

pO₂ = 190 mmHg

How many liters of SO2 will be produced from 26.9L O2?
Alexeev081 [22]

Answer:

26.9 L SO₂

Explanation:

Step 1: Write the balanced equation

S(s) + O₂(g) = SO₂(g)

Step 2: Establish the appropriate volume ratio

For gases at the same conditions, the volume ratio is equal to the molar ratio. The volume ratio of O₂(g) to SO₂(g) is 1:1.

Step 3: Calculate the liters of SO₂ produced from 26.9 L of O₂

We will use the previously established volume ratio.

26.9 L O₂ × 1 L SO₂/1 L O₂ = 26.9 L SO₂

A kinetics experiment is set up to collect the gas that is generated when a sample of chalk, consisting primarily of solid CaCO3
velikii [3]

(D) Decreasing the particle size of the CacO, by grinding it into a fine powder

Explanation:

To produce more gases by increasing the rate of the chemical reaction, if we grind the chalk into powder, this should walk.

The rate at which chemical reactions takes place is a measure of the speed of  the reaction.

Some factors control the rate of chemical reactions. They are:

  1. Nature of reactants
  2. Concentration of reactants or pressure if gaseous.
  3. Temperature
  4. Presence of a catalyst
  5. Sunlight

The most applicable in this scenario is grinding the chalk into fine powder. This process increases the surface area exposed. Surface area exposed proportionally affects the rate of a reaction.
