In what way have mass extinctions catalyzed evolutionary radiation? Mass extinction events cause mutations, increasing the genet

ic variability of populations. Mass extinction events permanently alter environments, favoring species with novel character combinations. Mass extinctions wipe out poorly competing species, enabling good competitors to diversify. Mass extinctions eliminate ecologically dominant species, enabling survivors to diversify in environments with few competitors.

Answer:

Mass extinction events permanently alter environments, favoring species with novel character combinations.

Explanation:

This is the most true and accurate answer but lets address why its the best choice.

A) "Mass extinction events cause mutations, increasing the genetic variability of populations" - Mass extinction events are not directly responsible for mutation in a population. Mutation is directly a result of issues during DNA replication / other long term exposures of certain mutagens (as seen in humans with UV radiation). Also mass extinction often limit genetic variability by wiping out large segments of populations.

C) "Mass extinctions wipe out poorly competing species, enabling good competitors to diversify" - This may not always be true. Dinosaurs were the predominant terrestrial animal prior to their extinction (the were not poorly competing species)

D) "Mass extinctions eliminate ecologically dominant species, enabling survivors to diversify in environments with few competitors." - Once again this is not entirely true, the issue with mass extinctions is that they in most cases entirely random events that do not discriminate against groups of populations because they are not easily survivable by a wide range of species hence the term mass extinction.

Now lets look at why B must be right.

"Mass extinction events permanently alter environments, favoring species with novel character combinations." - Mass extinction events such as major geological changes (volcanic eruptions) often change the environment as a result of their occurrence. In addition to changing environments they also wipe out a multitude of species and open up many new ecological niches that need to be filled. In the case of dinosaurs it is argued that after their extinction mammals filled their ecological niche as the dominant terrestrial animals. This is generally what is called adaptive radiation where these new species and genetic recombinants produced by natural selection in direct response to a environmental change are favored. This process is most readily seen after mass extinctions which is why, in my opinion, this answer fits the best.

Strike441 [17]

Answer:

distance=6.11m

Explanation:

A basketball player is running at a constant speed of 2.5 m/s when he tosses a basketball upward with a speed of 6.0 m/s. How far does the player run before he catches the ball? Ignore air resistance. I got stuck because I wasn't sure which formula to use when approaching this problem. Does it involve an angle at all?

first of all we get the time it takes to reach the maximum height

then twice of the time it takes to reach maximum height will be the time of flight

from newtons equation of motion

v=u+at

v=0

u=6m/s

0=6-9.81t

t=.61s

the time of flight will be 1.22secs

how far it travels will then be d, the basketball player moves with a horizontal speed 2.5m/s towards the ball

distance=speed*time

distance=2.5m/s*1.22

distance=6.11m

Does the surrounding air become warm or cool when vapour phase of H2O condenses? Explain
mel-nik [20]
The surrounding air will become warm when water vapor condenses. The vapors when become water will give away latent heat they have, we know that latent heat is required for the object to change states, so, the latent heat the water vapor had when it became water vapor from water will be given out when it again becomes water.

(a). The largest building in the world by volume is the boeing 747 plant in Everett, Washington. It measures approximately 631m
lions [1.4K]

Explanation:

Given that,

Length of the building, l = 631 m

Breadth of the building, b = 707 yards

Height of the building, h = 110 ft

1 meter = 3.28084 feet

631 m = 2070.21 feet

1 yard= 3 feet

707 yards = 2121 feet

(a) The volume of any cuboidal shape is given by :

V=l\times b\times h

V=2070.21\ ft\times 2121\ ft\times 110\ ft

V=4.83\times 10^8\ ft^3

(b) V=4.83\times 10^8\ ft^3

V=(4.83\times 10^8\ ft^3)(\dfrac{1\ m}{3.281\ ft})^3

V=1.37\times 10^7\ m^3

Hence, this is the required solution.

A woman with mass 50 kg is standing on the rim of a large horizontal disk that is rotating at 0.80 rev/s about an axis through i
irinina [24]

Answer:

Angular momentum of disc + woman is given as

L = 9759 kg m^2/s

Explanation:

As we know that the angular momentum of disc + woman is given as

L = (I_{disk} + I_{woman}) \omega

here we know for disk moment of inertia is given as

I_{disk} = \frac{1}{2}mR^2

I_{disk} = \frac{1}{2}(110)(4.3)^2 = 1017 kg m^2

similarly for woman we will have

I_{woman} = MR^2

I_{woman} = (50)(4.3^2)

I_{woman} = 924.5 kg m^2

so we will have

\omega = 2\pi (0.80) rad/s

so angular momentum is given as

L = (1017 + 924.5)(2\pi 0.80)

L = 9759 kg m^2/s
