Two nonpolar organic liquids, hexane (C6H14) and heptane (C7H16), are mixed. Do you expect ΔHsoln to be a large positive number,

a large negative number, or close to zero? Fill in the following sentence: ΔHsoln is determined by the relative magnitudes of the "old" solute-solute (ΔHsolute) and solvent-solvent (ΔHsolvent) interactions and the "new" solute-solvent (ΔHmix) interactions. In this process, the energy of mixing hexane and heptane (ΔHmix) is the energy of separating them individually (ΔHsolute + ΔHsolvent), so ΔHsoln is expected to be .

Answer:

ΔH of solution is expected to be close to zero.

Explanation:

When we mix two non polar organic liquids like hexane and heptane,the resulting mixture formed is an ideal solution.An ideal solution is formed when the force of attraction between the molecules of the two liquids is equal to the force of attraction between the molecules of the same type.

For instance if liquids A and B are mixed,

F_{A-A} = F_{B-B} = F_{A-B}

Hence the condition before and after mixing remains unchanged.

Since enthalpy change is associated with inter molecular force of attraction the enthalpy change for ideal solution is zero.

More examples of ideal solutions are:

1. Ethanol and Methanol

2. Benzene and Toluene

3. Ethyl bromide and Ethyl iodide

Two students are given different samples of a substance and are instructed to determine the properties of the substance.
Hunter-Best [27]

The complete question is given below:

Two students are given different samples of a substance and are instructed to determine the properties of the substance.

Which statement describes a property that will be the same for both students?

A. color because it is an extensive property

B. mass because it is an extensive property

C. boiling point because it is an intensive property

D. volume because it is an intensive property .

ANSWER

The correct option is C.

The physical properties of substances are divided into two, intensive and extensive properties.

Intensive properties refers to those features of a substance that do not depend on the quantity of the material that is available. Whether the sample available is big or small, the intensive properties remain the same. Examples of intensive properties are:  melting point, boiling point, refractive index, hardness, density color, etc. This question is asking us to look for an intensive property.

Extensive properties refers to those characteristics of a substance that depend on the amount of substance present. Examples of these properties are: mass, volume, size, weight, length, etc.

From the options given, option A is wrong because color is not an extensive property, it is intensive. Option B is wrong because the mass depend on the amount of sample given and the same thing apply to option D.

The correct option is C,  because no matter the quantity of that substance that you have, the boiling point will always remains the same.

If a 300.0 ml sample of a gas is heated at constant pressure from 25.0ºc to 55.0ºc, its new volume is _____ ml?
jekas [21]

 The new  volume is    330.2 ml

<u><em>calculation</em></u>

 The new  volume is  calculated using  the Charles  law formula

that is  V1/T1= V2/T2

where T1= 25.0  c  into kelvin  =  25 +273  = 298 K

         V1=  300.0 ml

       T2  = 55.0  c  into kelvin = 273   +55  =328  K

      V2 =  ? ml

make V2  the   subject of the formula  by  multiplying  both side by T2

V2= V1T2/ T1

V2 =[ (300.0 ml x 328 k)  / 298 k}  = 330.2 ml

Classify each amino acid according to whether its side chain is predominantly protonated or deprotonated at a pHpH of 7.40.7.40.
Zepler [3.9K]

Answer: His and Lys are deprotonated but Asp will be protonated.

Explanation:

As the pH is given as 7.4 and pK of His is given as 6.00. There will occur a positive charge on His when it's pH < pK therefore, it is neutral at the given pH.

As the pK value of Lys is 10.53 that is greater than the pH of 7.40. Therefore, charge on Lys is positive.

As the pK value of Asp is 3.65 which is less than the pH value of 7.40. Hence, Asp has a negative charge.

Therefore, we can conclude that His and Lys are deprotonated but Asp will be protonated.
