Caroline, a piano tuner, suspects that a piano's B4 key is out of tune. Normally, she would play the key along with her B4 tunin

g fork and tune the piano to match, but her B4 tuning fork is missing! Instead, she plays the errant key along with her A4 tuning fork (which has a frequency of 440.0 Hz), displays the resulting waveform on a handheld oscilloscope, and measures a beat frequency of 15.9 Hz. Then, she plays the errant key along with her C5 tuning fork (which has a frequency of 523.3 Hz) and measures a beat frequency of 67.4 Hz. What frequency is being played by the out-of-tune key? If the B4 key is supposed to produce a frequency of 493.9, is the frequency of the key lower than it should be ("flat") or higher than it should be ("sharp")?

Answer:

455.9 Hz, Flat

Explanation:

The beat frequency is basically the difference between the frequency of the B4 note and the frequency of the A4 tuning fork. This means the B4 note is 15.9 Hz off of 440Hz, and 67.4 Hz off of 525.3 Hz. As B4 is between the two notes, it would make sense to find its frequency by adding 15.9 to 440 and subtracting 67.4 from 523.3, both if which give us a frequency 455.9 Hz for the B4 key. This is because the note doesn't change for the different turning forks so both differences should result in the same frequency. Because the note should be 493.9 frequency but instead has a frequency of 455.9 Hz, it is flat because the frequency is lower than it is supposed to be.

Hope this helped!

In a power plant, pipes transporting superheated vapor are very common. Superheated vapor flows at a rate of 0.3 kg/s inside a p
grigory [225]

Answer:h=160.84 W/m^2-K

Explanation:

Given

mass flow rate=0.3 kg/s

diameter of pipe=5 cm

length of pipe=10 m

Inside temperature=22

Pipe surface =100

Temperature drop=30

specific heat of vapor(c)=2190 J/kg.k

heat supplied Q=mc\Delta T=0.3\times 2190\times (30)

Heat due to convection =hA(100-30)

A=\pi d\cdot L

A=\pi 0.05\times 10=1.571 m^2

Q_{convection}=h\times 1.571\times (100-22)=122.538 h

Q=Q_{convection}

19,710=122.538 h

h=160.84 W/m^2-K

Two speakers face each other, and they each emit a sound of wavelength λ. One speaker is 180∘ out of phase with respect to the o
mel-nik [20]

Answer:

a. 3/4λ

d. 1/4λ

Explanation:

When the wavelength of the sound waves is λ and the two waves are having same frequency the waves are said to be out of phase if their phase difference is in the multiples of \frac{\lambda}{2} or 180°.

When the two waves are out of phase then their opposite maxima coincide at the same time resulting in the minimum amplitude of the resulting wave throughout.

  • As we observe from the schematic that the a wave has sinusoidal pattern of variation and we get a maxima after each \frac{\lambda}{4} of the distance.
  • Here we have two speakers out of phase therefore on shifting one of the speakers by the odd multiples of \frac{\lambda}{2} we have the maxima or the extreme amplitudes.

So, we must place the microphone at  3/4λ and 1/4λ to pickup the loudest sound.
