A brass alloy is known to have a yield strength of 240 MPa (35,000 psi), a tensile strength of 310 MPa (45,000 psi), and an elas

tic modulus of 110 GPa (16.0 * 106 psi). A cylindrical specimen of this alloy 15.2 mm (0.60 in.) in diameter and 380 mm (15.0 in.) long is stressed in tension and found to elongate 1.9 mm (0.075 in.). On the basis of the information given, is it possible to compute the magnitude of the load necessary to produce this change in length? If so, calculate the load; if not, explain why.

Answer:

Here Strain due to testing is greater than the strain due to yielding that is why computation of load is not possible.

Explanation:

Given that

Yield strength ,Sy= 240 MPa

Tensile strength = 310 MPa

Elastic modulus ,E= 110 GPa

L=380 mm

ΔL = 1.9 mm

Lets find strain:

Case 1 :

Strain due to elongation (testing)

ε = ΔL/L

ε = 1.9/380

ε = 0.005

Case 2 :

Strain due to yielding

\varepsilon' =\dfrac{S_y}{E}

\varepsilon' =\dfrac{240}{110\times 1000}

ε '=0.0021

Here Strain due to testing is greater than the strain due to yielding that is why computation of load is not possible.

For computation of load strain due to testing should be less than the strain due to yielding.

A hockey puck slides off the edge of a table with an initial velocity of 23.2 m/s and experiences no air resistance. The height
Dennis_Churaev [7]

Answer:

15.1°

Explanation:

The horizontal velocity of the hockey puck is constant during the motion, since there are no forces acting along this direction:

v_x = 23.2 m/s

Instead, the vertical velocity changes, due to the presence of the acceleration due to gravity:

v_y(t)= v_{y0} -gt (1)

where

v_{y0}=0 is the initial vertical velocity

g = 9.8 m/s^2 is the gravitational acceleration

t is the time

Since the hockey puck falls from a height of h=2.00 m, the time it needs to reach the ground is given by

h=\frac{1}{2}gt^2\\t=\sqrt{\frac{2h}{g}}=\sqrt{\frac{2(2.00 m)}{9.8 m/s^2}}=0.64 s

Substituting t into (1) we find the final vertical velocity

v_y = -(9.8 m/s^2)(0.64 s)=-6.3 m/s

where the negative sign means that the velocity is downward.

Now that we have both components of the velocity, we can calculate the angle with respect to the horizontal:

tan \theta = \frac{|v_y|}{v_x}=\frac{6.3 m/s}{23.2 m/s}=0.272\\\theta = tan^{-1} (0.272)=15.1^{\circ}

You have a 2m long wire which you will make into a thin coil with N loops to generate a magnetic field of 3mT when the current i
Anni [7]

Answer:

<em>radius of the loop =  7.9 mm</em>

<em>number of turns N ≅ 399 turns</em>

Explanation:

length of wire L= 2 m

field strength B = 3 mT = 0.003 T

current I = 12 A

recall that field strength B = μnI

where n is the turn per unit length

vacuum permeability μ  = 4\pi *10^{-7}  T-m/A = 1.256 x 10^-6 T-m/A

imputing values, we have

0.003 = 1.256 x 10^−6 x n x 12

0.003 = 1.507 x 10^-5 x n

n = 199.07 turns per unit length

for a length of 2 m,

number of loop N = 2 x 199.07 = 398.14 ≅ <em>399 turns</em>

since  there are approximately 399 turns formed by the 2 m length of wire, it means that each loop is formed by 2/399 = 0.005 m of the wire.

this length is also equal to the circumference of each loop

the circumference of each loop = 2\pi r

0.005 = 2 x 3.142 x r

r = 0.005/6.284 = 7.9*10^{-4} m = 0.0079 m =<em> 7.9 mm</em>

An inclined plane is made out of a short plank of wood. It is used to move a 300N box up onto a tabletop 1m above the floor. Wha
Ronch [10]

Answer:

<em>The purpose of an inclinded plane is to make easier to move objects to a certain height.</em>

The technology behind this is about the Work you need to use to move the object upwards. Basically, when we use an inclined plane, we are splitting the net force, making easier to move. All this means, the force needed to move the objecto up will be lower, due to the inclined plane.

So, if the force needed is lower, then the work is also lower, because the work done is defined as the product between the force applied and the distance traveled.

<em>In addition, if we have a longer inclined plane, that means the force needed is even lower,</em> beacuse the distance is increased, but the Work is the same, because it only depends on the initial and final point.

Therefore, in this case, the work would remain the same and the mechanical advantage would increase. As we said before, the work needed will be the same despite the force decreases, because the distance increases, remaining the work as a constant. And the mechanical advantage increases, because it's easier to move if the inclined plane is longer.
